Abstract

Samuel Clemens is an example of a writer whose literary way was closely connected with his job at the newspapers. His first journalistic works were full of facts from different spheres of life. In this article we offer a thematic and functional analysis of news journalism - one of the most poorly researched periods of his work. Samuel Clemens intentionally combines various techniques and styles, uniting them in flexible genre of letter correspondence. Nevertheless, we highlight informational and analytical areas because of the dominant discourse. Using the form of letter correspondence Samuel Clemens does not give only pure facts but presents subjective emotional involvement in some events and his personal attitude.
