  1. Manuscript Format Guidelines

Page and paragraph parameters: all indents are 2 cm, portrait orientation, 1 cm tab.

Text parameters: MS Word, normal font, a 12-point font size, Arial, single line spacing, width alignment, automatic hyphenation of words. Do not use more than one space between words, spaces for alignment, no hyphens, underscores.

Headings of structural sections of the manuscript (for example, INTRODUCTION) should be written in bold capital letters, left-aligned, with a paragraph indent. In Russian, only « » quotation marks are used. Subsection headings of the manuscript should be written only in bold italics and not indented.

Latin names of genuses and species of the living world are written in italics, while those of higher rank taxa are written in straight type.

Biochemical terms and names of chemical compounds are given in accordance with IUPAC international rules.

Units of measurement should be chosen following the SI International System of Units.

Abbreviations of terms and names should be minimized and carried out in accordance with GOST 7.12-93.

All numerical data should be summarized in tables. In Russian, decimal digits shall be typed with a comma (2,51), though replaced with a period in English (2.51). Only the symbol “×” is used as a multiplication sign. The symbol “•” denotes complex compounds in chemical formulas and noncovalent complexes.

MS Word (Table – Add table) or MS Excel can be used to draw tables. Tables should have sequential numbers, title and reference in the text (Table 1). The use of abbreviations and notations in the titles, as well as in the texts of the tables, is not advisable. However, if they are used, they should be deciphered in a note to the table. The table should be placed in the text after its first mentioning. The font size in the table can be reduced to 9 points. Within the table, headings are capitalized, subheadings are lowercase if they form one sentence with the heading. Headings are centered. Side headings are centered or left centered. Diagonal division of cells is not recommended. An En Dash (–) is required in an empty cell. The number of decimal places (measurement accuracy) must be the same.

Specialized programs (ChemWindow) should be used for typing complex chemical formulas.

The built-in Equation editor of MS Word should be used for mathematical expressions (Insert – Equation). Equation elements are italicized, with a 10-point font size. Equations should be created as a single object, not composed of parts. Formulas and equations should be typed from a new line, with no paragraph indentation, and centered.

The data in the text, tables and figures must not be repeated.

  1. Figure Format Guidelines

High quality of figures should be provided.

Figures (illustrations, graphs, charts, diagrams, schemes) should be sequentially numbered, titled and referenced in the text (Fig. 1). Figures should be placed in the text after its first mentioning. Abbreviations and notations are not allowed in the titles, as well as within the figures themselves.

Maximum size of the figure is 170 mm width and 240 mm height.

All figure inscriptions should be editable and in 8-point font Arial (main) written in the language of the article. In exceptional cases, the font size may be reduced to 5-6 pt. Alphabetic numbering of figure parts is performed in 10 Arial font (bold straight) in English.

The size of one figure should not exceed 5 Mb.

Figures are designed without frames.

Vector graphics are provided in .cdr, .ai formats with the possibility of editing (see above for requirements to font, line thickness and other parameters of illustrations). When exporting from other programs, PostScript (.eps) format with 300 dpi resolution is used.

Photographs, scanned materials are submitted in TIFF or JPEG format, with JPEG format saving in maximum or high quality. The resolution of raster graphics is not less than 600 dpi for black-and-white figures and not less than 300 dpi for photographs. This also applies to the basis for the production of vector images.

If possible, MS Excel should be used to draw graphs, charts and diagrams. Each figure should have a caption that provides an explanation of all its elements. The curves in the figures are numbered with Arabic numerals and commented in the figure captions. All inscriptions on the figures (names of axes, figures on the axes, dot symbols and comments to them, etc.) should be made large enough, in the same font, so that they are easily readable when reproduced in print. Names of axes, units of measurement of physical quantities and other inscriptions are required to be made in Russian. Frames around and inside graphs and diagrams are not allowed. Each graph, diagram or scheme is inserted into the text as an MS Excel object.

The List of sources / References Format Guidelines

At least 20 sources should be provided in the List of sources / References. No less than 50% of them for the last 5 years, including at least 7 foreign sources indexed in global citation databases, such as Scopus and Web of Science.

The list of sources should include only printed publications and electronic journals. However, if necessary, footnotes can be used to refer to normative legal acts (laws, codes, decrees, regulations, etc.), state standards, educational publications (textbooks, manuals, lecture notes, guidelines, etc.), reference publications (reference books, dictionaries and encyclopedias), dissertations and their extended abstracts, as well as pages of electronic resources without specific authorship.

The authors are fully responsible for the accuracy of the bibliographic description of the sources, including their translation into English.

References to the cited literature are given in the text in square brackets and numbered in the order of mentioning.

The sources referred to in the text of the article are listed in two versions:

Russian version (List of sources). All the sources including non-Russian are given in the Russian language and formatted in accordance with state standard GOST R 7.0.5-2008 “Bibliographic reference. General requirements and rules of compilation”. References to electronic documents should be arranged in accordance with GOST 7.82-2001 “Bibliographic record. Bibliographic description of electronic resources”. References to unpublished works are not allowed.

All references should be formatted consistently, with a period only, and no dashes between the parts of the description. The symbol № is not used, a number is denoted by the Latin letter N not followed by a dot. A double slash separates the description of the entire document, a part of which is referenced. The double slash is not preceded by a period. Spaces before and after the // sign are mandatory.

English version (References). For international databases, References is given in a separate block, repeating the List of sources, regardless on the presence or absence of foreign sources. For Russian-language sources or sources in a language other than English, the reference is a compilation of transliteration and translation of the information into English. If the List of sources contains references to English-language publications, they are fully repeated in References, only their formatting is changed. If all sources referred to in the text are in English, only References are used, without the List of sources.

For Russian-language articles, the following structure of the reference should be used: authors; translation of the article title into English that corresponds to the published translation in the cited source, if any; transliteration of the source title or its translation into English; the publication data in the format “year; volume(number):pages”). If the journal does not have an official or proposed on the website translated title, the title remains in transliteration; if the journal has an official or proposed by the editorial board title in English in the certificate of registration of mass media or on the website, it is indicated. EDN and DOI of the cited article should also be indicated, if the article is indexed in eLibrary and CrossRef databases. These indexes should be inserted while keeping the hyperlinks active.

For articles from the proceedings of international conferences and non-periodical collections, provide the authors, the title of the article in English in the author’s or official published version, the title of the collection in transliteration and its author's or official translation into English (with the preposition “in” before the title), the editors of the collection, the place of publication and the publisher (if the name of the publisher includes the name of the organization, it must also be translated), the year of publication, the volume and issue of the collection (if any), as well as the pages of the article.

References to other sources (books, monographs, patents) contain only authors, translation of the source title into English, place of publication and publisher (if the name of the publisher includes the name of the organization, it must also be translated), year of publication, as well as the total number of pages in the source.

All the authors of the cited articles should be indicated. The titles of the cited journals are given in full, not abridged.

The description of each source, except for English-language sources, should indicate the language of the source (e.g., In Russian).
