RADIOTHERAPY AS THE ONLY TREATMENT IN CASE OF TONGUE CANCER PATIENTS

Abstract

The paper presents the efficiency of radiotherapy, as the only method of treatment in 236 patients with tongue cancer. This group includd only patients who did not undergo surgery and chemotherapy for a number of reasons. The group (236 patients) consisted of 141(59,7%) men and 95 (40,3%) women. In 217 (91,9%) patients were morphologically proven squamous cell carcinoma of different histo-logic grade, in 14 (5,9%) patients – acinic cell carcinoma and low differentiated carcinoma, 5 (2,2%) patients were suffering from differentforms of sarcoma. 5-year survival rate in this group of patients was dependent not only on the method and technique of radiotherapy, butalso on the Stage of the tumor. 5-year survival rate was achieved in Stage I in 87,5% tongue cancer patients, Stage II – 47,5%, Stage III –27,0%, Stage IV – 0%.
