Abstract

The surgical treatment of vascular malformations of the head and the neck is fraught with a high risk of intraoperative bleeding and extensive postoperative cosmetic defects. Ninety four patients exhibited malformations of the low-speed type that corresponds to the venous and capillary form. Sclerotherapy was used in 16 patients with venous and capillary malformations of the head and the neck. Five of them were treated with the use of a novocaine-containing 70% alcohol solution, and the remaining 11 with aethoxysklerol at various concentrations. The use of sclerosing therapy for the management of low-speed malformations was shown to reduce the risk of bleeding during the subsequent surgical interventions. It is concluded that certain sclerotherapeutic modalities may be an alternative to surgery for the patients with extensive venous and/or capillary malformations. Specifically, the administration of a 1% aethoxysklerol for sclerotherapy of venous malformations of the head and the neck may have a good outcome with minimal complications.
