Factors of Richness of Urban Floras in the Ural–Volga Region

Tretyakova A., Veselkin D., Senator S., Golovanov Y.

Аннотация

Original data on 14 urban floras in the Ural–Volga region have been analyzed to estimate the effect of the geographic location, topography, climate, size, and age of a city on the species richness of its flora. This parameter in different cities varied from 288 to 973 species, with the proportion of alien species varying from 21 to 41%. Factors of flora richness were estimated by multiple linear regression using principal component estimates obtained by factor analysis of 13 city characteristics as predictors. It has been confirmed that the richness of urban floras depends primarily on the city size, which accounts for greater proportions of variation in the number of native species (56%), the number of alien species (91%), and the total number of species (71%). In addition, variation in the number of native species is determined by terrain elevation (22%), increasing at higher elevations. The proportion of alien species in the urban flora does not depend on the size of the city and is negatively correlated with terrain elevation.

Earlywood and Latewood Features of Pinus sylvestris in Semiarid Natural Zones of South Siberia

Babushkina E., Belokopytova L., Kostyakova T., Kokova V.

Аннотация

Chronologies of the anatomical and integral parameters of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) earlywood and latewood were investigated for two sites in the Minusinsk depression with different soil moisture conditions. Patterns of statistical characteristics and climatic responses of the chronologies were identified. Differences between sites were revealed in the cell diameter and wall thickness distributions. These differences are indicators of adapting pine wood structure to the moisture deficit.

Holocene Dynamics of Vegetation and Ecological Conditions in the Center of the East European Plain

Novenko E., Mazei N., Kupriyanov D., Volkova E., Tsyganov A.

Аннотация

Changes in the vegetation and fire regimes in the central East European Plain during the second half of the Holocene have been reconstructed based on the results of paleobotanical analysis and radiocarbon dating of material from a section of peat deposit in the Mordovia State Nature Reserve. It has been shown that birch–pine forests were widespread in the region between 7000 and 5000 yr BP, with the frequency of fires in that period being high (the fire return interval ranged from 10–20 to 100 years). Beginning from 5000 yr BP and to the early 20th century, broadleaf forests were dominant, with the fire return interval increasing to 300–500 years or longer.

Residual Effect of Induced Water Stress and Nitrogen Addition on the Mycobiota in Scots Pine Stands

Motiejūnaitė J., Buožytė R., Adamonytė G., Iršenaitė R., Kasparavičius J., Kutorga E., Markovskaja S., Stakėnas V., Klyukina E.

Аннотация

Mycobiota (fungi, lichens and myxomycetes) was examined in permanent plots following experiments of artificial drought (D) and nitrogen addition (N) and compared with untreated forest (C), in Scots pine stand planted on Arenosols. Species diversity and relationships between fungal community structure and environmental variables (plant species numbers and cover, bryophyte cover, soil and bark pH, tree mortality) were explored. Both D and N treatments lead to decrease of fungal species in general, however, responses of individual trophic and ecological groups varied. The strongest effect of the treatments was observed for soil fungi, especially mycorrhizal: numbers of fruiting species and ectomycorrhizal root tips decreased, and species composition has changed. Saprotrophic fungi reacted by changes in species composition but not in numbers. Of the studied environmental variables, the most significant effect on mycobiota had bryophyte and vascular plant cover as well as vascular plant species numbers.

Variation in Meristic Characters of Head Seismosensory System in Roach Rutilus rutilus (L.) under Hydrochemical Conditions of Water Bodies of Udmurtia

Kotegov B.

Аннотация

Average and summary values of five paired meristic characters of the head seismosensory system have been estimated in roach from 11 ponds and medium-size reservoirs in Udmurtia. It has been found that the level of fluctuation variance in the summary character values is significantly correlated with the values of water mineralization and total dry solids in the water bodies, and the average summary values, with the absolute and relative contents of magnesium ions in the water. A possible role of magnesium in determining the quantitative indices of seismosensory characters, which are formed during early fish ontogeny, is discussed with regard to the results of a pilot laboratory experiment on rearing roach juveniles under different hydrochemical conditions.

Morphogenetic Effects of Drought and Nonselective Elimination in Population of Bank Vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) in Southern Taiga Subzone

Vasil’ev A., Bol’shakov V., Vasil’eva I., Evdokimov N., Sineva N.

Аннотация

Methods of geometric morphometrics have been used to estimate the influence ratio of nonselective elimination and drought factors on variation in the shape and size of the mandible in the population of bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus Schreb.) in the southern taiga subzone. Nonselective elimination of rodent populations for medical and sanitary purposes was carried out in a felling site located in a focus of hemorrhagic fever, in the spring of a climatically normal year and of a dry year. The summer samples of mature young of the year from control bank vole colonies and impact colonies (i.e., recovered after deratization) in adjacent years have been compared. The results show that drought, nonselective elimination, and the interaction of these factors have significant effects on the size and shape of the mandible. Changes in its shape under drought conditions are largely due to allometry. Morphogenetic effects of nonselective elimination are highly repeatable between climatically different years. A significantly higher level of within-group morphological disparity (MNND) of the undisturbed control cenopopulation in a dry year has been revealed, which indirectly indicates a stronger destabilization of morphogenesis upon exposure to the autecological factor. Every ecological factor contributes to the development of specific configurations of the mandible; i.e., it induces certain changes in morphogenesis in response to aut- and synecological effects and their combination.

Changes in the Species Composition of Parasites in European Perch, Perca fluviatilis, in Lake Gusinoye (Lake Baikal Basin) during Depression and Subsequent Recovery of Host Abundance

Dugarov Z., Burdukovskaya T., Batueva M., Baldanova D., Sondueva L., Zhepkholova O., Mazur O.

Аннотация

Changes in the species composition of parasite fauna in the European perch in Lake Gusinoye (the Lake Baikal basin) were analyzed in the periods before and during depression of host abundance (the early and late 1970s) and in the years of its recovery to a stable level (the mid-2010s). The period of depression was associated with a significant decrease in the species richness of parasite fauna. Subsequent recovery of perch abundance to a stable level resulted in an increase in the parasite species richness, but it remained lower than before the depression of host abundance.

Ecological Groups of the Daubed Shanny Leptoclinus maculatus (Fries, 1838), an Arcto-boreal Species, Regarding Growth and Early Development

Pekkoeva S., Murzina S., Ieshko E., Nefedova Z., Falk-Petersen S., Berge J., Lonne O., Nemova N.

Аннотация

The patterns of growth and development have been studied in L. maculatus early life stages of different ecological groups (pelagic and demersal) from Kongsfjorden and Billefjorden (the northwestern coast of West Spitsbergen). It has been found that the growth rate of larvae markedly increases by age 2+ (stage L2), which is due to their transition to exogenous feeding. Consideration is given to changes in the length and condition of the lipid sac (a provisory organ) in the period of its formation, growth, and resorption in the course of ontogeny. The lipid sac reaches the maximum size at stage L4* and is resorbed at stage L5. Analysis of individual variation in the size and body weight of fish early life stages provides the possibility to evaluate the adaptation capacity of a species under specific conditions of the Arctic.

Larval and Juvenile Fish Assemblage Structure of Inshore Habitats in the Middle Reaches of Li River, China: Spatial and Temporal Patterns in Relation to Abiotic Factors

Feng W., Wu Z., Huang L., Ding Y., Shi R.

Аннотация

To evaluate the effect of abiotic factors on larval and juvenile fish assemblage in shallow waters of middle reaches of Li River, Guilin, China. Samplings were taken monthly at 7 stations in the mainstream and 2 stations in 3 tributaries from May 2014 to April 2015. Synchronously, temperature, pH, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen rainfall and discharge were obtained. In all, 11.886 larval and juvenile fish from 18 species belonging to 8 families, 16 genera was captured. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed obvious significant difference between the environmental variables across sampling areas and months. The results of Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) indicated that water temperature, turbidity, discharge and rainfall were dominant factors on larval and juvenile fish assemblage.

Ecophysiology of Steppe Mouse Subspecies Mus spicilegius spicilegus, Peteni, 1883 (Rodentia, Mammalia) at the South Boundary of its Distribution

Beltcheva M., Metcheva R.

Аннотация

Diet, food preferences and main ecophysiological characteristics such like energy requirements and thermoregulation characteristics of Mus spicilegus spicilegus (Petenyi, 1882) were studied. The most preferred foods for the mice were seeds of weed species that composed more than 85% of their diet. The results of food selection experiments shows that the total daily consumption by mice is 2.77 ± 0.76 g/animal/day or 5.5 kJ/g/day or 84.9 kJ/animal/day. From the total daily energy consumption 16.4% go back to nature in the form of feces and urine and the rest 83.6% animals utilized for assimilation. The results of the temperature preferences for Mus s. spicilegus shows preferred temperature zone from around 26 to 36°C where mice spent about 72% of the experimental time. The lowest value of oxygen consumption for resting metabolism rate (RMR) was registered at 30°C–3.20 ± 0.71 cm3 O2/g/h. It is possible to consider that the thermoneutral zone is around these temperature values. The obtained results give reason to conclude that from an ecophysiologycal point of view the climate in the south boundary of distribution provides optimal conditions for species development. The main cause for population decreasing probably is the loss of open habitats including natural steppe grasslands.
