Despite well-studied role of the adapter STING in the cell response to cytosolic DNA, its contribution to the activation of programmed cell death was not considered at the proper level. In this study was shown that activation of STING in T cells leads to production of typeI interferons, upregulation expression levels of the interferon-stimulating gene group (ISG), as well as cell death. It is also shown that cell death is mediated by UPR (Unfolded Protein Response).
