The journal “Izvestia of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Mechanics of Fluid and Gas” (Izvestiya RAN. MZhG) was founded in 1966, when the journal ”Izvestiya AS USSR. Department of Technical Sciences” was transformed into two journals ”Izvestiya AS USSR. Mechanics of Fluid and Gas” and ”Izvestia AS USSR. Mechanics of Solid State”. The very names of these journals tell how the scientific topics were distributed between them.
Academician G.I. Petrov became the first editor-in-chief of the journal “Mechanics of Fluid and Gas”. The initial period of the journal's formation fell on the rapid development of scientific areas related to the creation of space technology. Academician G.I. Petrov, as one of the most authoritative scientists of the USSR on this subject, managed to create a creative atmosphere among the authors and readers. Several generations of scientists and engineers of the Soviet Union and Russia have linked their scientific destiny with the journal.
In 1988-2012 the editorial board of the journal was headed by Academician G.G. Cherny. In 2013-2020. - Academician A.G. Kulikovsky. Since 2020, the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal is Academician S.T. Surzhikov.
