Dust formation in the arc heating of zinc-plated steel

Alpatova A., Simonyan L., Isakova N.

Аннотация

Dust formation in the plasma-arc heating of zinc-plated steel in argon is studied, when the current is 170–190 A, the argon flow rate is 0.06 m3/h, and the pressure in the furnace chamber is 0.1 MPa. Zinc evaporates practically completely in the first 30 s of heating. The structure of the trapped zinc-bearing dust is heterogeneous: the particles are of different shape (spherical, acicular, or membranous particles), different size, and different composition. The composition of individual dust particles is analyzed on an iCAP 6300 spectrometer (Thermo Electron, United States). On that basis, their oxide composition is estimated by means of Terra software. The dust includes particles consisting of ZnO, Fe2O4, carbon, and pure iron. The results indicate that, in the plasma heating of zinc-plated steel, the zinc-bearing dust may be captured separately from the other dust in the initial smelting period.

Modeling the atmospheric concentration of secondary steel-plant emissions

Orelkina D., Petelin A., Polulyakh L., Podgorodetskii G.

Аннотация

A model is proposed for calculating the spatial distribution of secondary gaseous emissions around steel plants. The model is based on the maximum-risk principle. The following are the basic factors determining the maximum risk of exceeding the permissible concentration of the secondary emission: the formation of the emissions, the propagation of the emissions; and the falloff in concentration. Fundamental differences in the methods of calculating the propagation of primary and secondary gas emissions are noted. In particular, secondary emissions are generated not by point sources but over the whole region where the concentration of the primary emission exceeds its background value in the atmosphere. The concentration field of secondary sulfuricacid emissions is analyzed for a spatially distributed source on the basis of data from OAO Magnitogorskii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat. The H2SO4 concentration is plotted as a function of the distance from the source of the primary emission, for different wind speeds. The functional dependence of the H2SO4 concentration on the distance has a clear maximum. The position of the peak and the corresponding H2SO4 concentration may be determined for any wind speed if the mean power of the primary emission is known over the specified time interval.

Production of electrolytic manganese dioxide from purified solutions after the leaching of manganese-bearing slurry

Abdykirova G., Tanekeeva M., Sydykov A., Diosenova S.

Аннотация

The production of electrolytic manganese dioxide from purified solutions after the leaching of manganese-bearing slurry is investigated. The influence of the anodic current density on the electrolysis of manganese-bearing solutions is determined. The preliminary purification of manganese-bearing solutions before electrolysis is discussed. Purification of the solution at pH 6.5–7.0 ensures the maximum deposition of all the impurities that interfere with electrolysis: copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, iron (III), and iron (II). After impurity deposition, the pulp is filtered; the hydrate deposits are washed; and the filtered liquid is sent for electrolysis to obtain electrolytic manganese dioxide. The samples of electrolytic manganese dioxide are studied by means of X-ray fluorescent analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the electrolytic manganese dioxide obtained in the laboratory with anodic current density Ia = 150–200 A/m2 meets all the requirements on a highly active product: the content of the basic component (MnO2) in the experiments is 95.0–96.5 wt %.

Video detection of problems in the melting of consumable electrodes in a vacuum arc furnace

Borodin A., Kabulova E., Polozhentsev K.

Аннотация

Methods are proposed for the detection of problems in vacuum arc melting. Video cameras are mounted on the vacuum arc furnace in order to monitor the melting process. Usually, the automatic control system for the melting process only measures the quantities required for direct control. In some cases, those measurements do not permit the detection of specific nonstandard melting conditions. However, on the basis of the video images, the supervisor can identify and eliminate such problems. The video feed is divided into frames. Each frame is a matrix consisting of pixels. On the basis of the sum of pixels in the image, anomalous melting conditions may be determined. Algorithms are proposed for analysis of the video images so as to detect anomalous melting conditions.

Defect healing in the axial zone of continuous-cast billet

Smyrnov Y., Skliar V., Belevitin V., Shmyglya R., Smyrnov O.

Аннотация

Minimization of the metal consumption in components imposes ever-increasing structural requirements on steel. Accordingly, it is important to study the behavior of structural defects in continuous-cast billet (shrinkage pores, gas bubbles, axial porosity) during deformation. The use of laminar physical models to study the pressure treatment of metals is further developed in the present work. The influence of the strain on defect healing may be assessed by using laminar models together with defect application to the surface of layer n and the analysis of information regarding its distortion. The proposed method is applied to the deformation of continuous- cast bar billet in the first three rectangular grooves of the reduction cell in the 500/370 linear rolling mill at PAO Donetskii Metalloprokatnyi Zavod. On the basis of the experimental data, the existing healing mechanism for axial metal defects may be refined in terms of the total extension and the applied deforming forces.

Thermophysical properties of Kachkanar titanomagnetite pellets

Yur’ev B., Gol’tsev V.

Аннотация

The thermophysical properties of Kachkanar titanomagnetite pellets of different basicity are determined. By mixing, the dependence of the mean physical specific heat of the pellets on the temperature and phase composition is found. The apparent specific heat of the pellets is determined by means of a gravimetric system with continuous recording of the change in pellet mass. By establishing an oxidative or neutral atmosphere, it is possible to distinguish between oxidation and decarbonization. The thermal diffusivity of the pellets is determined by means of a quasi-steady method, which permits the use of simple formulas in continuous heating. The thermal conductivity of the pellets is found from an equation relating their density, specific heat, and thermal diffusivity. The results are of great interest and may be used in the design of new roasting systems and also in optimization of the operational parameters of existing systems.

Noninertial control of the blast furnace and the carburization of iron

Tleugabulov S., Tleugabulov B.

Аннотация

Essentially, the reduction of iron in the blast furnace and the oxidative smelting of steel in the oxygen converter are opposing processes. In addressing the carburization of iron in the blast furnace and its decarburization in the converter, we consider noninertial control of the zonal blast-furnace processes. A functional relation is established between the parameters of the zonal processes and the parameters of the hot blast, the reducing gas, and the blast-furnace gas. On that basis, the batch and coke consumption and the yield of metal, slag, and gas in unit time may be strictly and continuously regulated. That, in turn, permits monitoring of the ore load on the coke. Noninertial control of the zonal blast-furnace processes by this means permits regulation of the slag’s oxidative potential, the ore load, and the consumption of injected dusty iron oxides and hence reduction of the carbon content in the hot metal to 2.0–2.5% or less. This approach leads ultimately to the creation of a single-stage process from ore to steel.

Stabilization of refining slags by correction of their phase composition

Sheshukov O., Nekrasov I., Mikheenkov M., Egnazar’yan D., Ovchinnikova L.

Аннотация

The stabilization of refining slags in ladle treatment with alumina fluxes is studied. In refining, the slag is stabilized in the presence of alumina fluxes thanks to isomorphic replacement of a calcium ion by alkali-metal ions and to decrease in the dicalcium-silicate content in the melt as a result of its replacement by aluminum-bearing phases.

Sheet cooling in a roller quenching machine

Ostapenko A., Beygelzimer E., Kozlenko D., Gritsenko S., Goncharov N.

Аннотация

The temperature over the thickness and width of the quenched sheet is studied experimentally in the roller quenching machine at OAO Severstal’. The result permits industrial assessment of the efficiency of the first header with slotted nozzle and subsequent sections with flat spray nozzles. In addition, the length of the active water layer at the lower sheet surface may be estimated, and the optimal ratio of the flow rates in upper and lower cooling may be analyzed. The conclusions may be employed in developing the design, technology and software for automated control systems used in the heat treatment of steel sheet.

Thermomechanical fatigue of dies for hot stamping

Vlasov A.

Аннотация

A method is proposed for calculating the fatigue life of dies used in hot stamping. Failure is assessed in terms of the strain and kinematic factors. Thermocyclic weakening is taken into account in determining the accumulated plastic strain. A special subprogram permits prediction of the number of cycles to die failure on the basis of finite-element modeling of tool–blank deformation.

Influence of heat treatment after welding on the microhardness of steel joints in marine platforms

Goli-Oglu E.

Аннотация

Weld joints in fixed marine platforms must be highly reliable. Certain zones of the weld seam may be very hard and hence may act as stress concentrators. Therefore, in some cases, additional heat treatment is required after welding. The microhardness of the basic sections in the weld joint of microalloyed low-carbon streel sheet (thickness 60 mm) obtained by thermomechanical rolling is investigated. Two-coordinate measurements of the microhardness in the basic thermal-influence zones are described. The influence of postweld heat treatment on the microhardness of opposite walls of the weld joint is determined.

Improving the plasticity of thin cold-rolled steel sheet for cold stamping

Doshchechkina I., D’yachenko S., Ponomarenko I., Tatarkina I.

Аннотация

Two methods of surface treatment are proposed to improve the technological plasticity of thin cold-rolled carbon-steel sheet: ionic bombardment by low-energy titanium atoms; and epilam coating. Both methods markedly increase the extensibility of the sheet (by a factor of 1.2–1.3), as estimated by the maximum crater depth without cracking in Erichsen tests (from the VG group to values exceeding those for the VOSV group, which corresponds to extremely complex extension, in State Standard GOST 9045–93). This is associated with change in the behavior of the sheet on deformation (with change in the properties of the material) as a result of two processes: the healing of surface defects; and the creation of hybrid nanocrystalline and submicrocrystalline structure in the surface layer. In epilam coating, only the first process occurs; in ionic bombardment, both are observed.

Extraction of zinc and iron from electrosmelting dust

Nemchinova N., Chernykh V., Tyutrin A., Patrushov A.

Аннотация

The extraction of zinc and iron from dusty electrosmelting wastes is discussed. The chemical composition of the dust is investigated. Methods of obtaining zinc- and iron-bearing products by reduction are identified. The optimal conditions for the generation and capture of zinc sublimates are determined. A system for processing steel-smelting dust to obtain iron is proposed. Simultaneously, this technology extracts zinc from the dust in the form of zinc-oxide concentrate.
