Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to the editorial office of the journal "Izvestiya Russian Geographical Society" are subject to mandatory blind review (the authors of the manuscript do not receive information about the reviewers). If possible, a double-blind review is carried out, when the reviewer also does not receive information about the authors of the manuscript. Each manuscript, with the exception of materials for the sections "Chronicle", "Reviews", "Anniversaries", is reviewed, as a rule, by two reviewers.

The review of manuscripts is carried out by members of the editorial board, as well as by invited reviewers — leading experts in the relevant field. The decision on the choice of a reviewer for the examination of the article is made by the editor-in-chief or the executive secretary of the editorial board. The standard review period is 1 month.

Each reviewer has the right to refuse a review if there is an obvious conflict of interests that affects the perception and interpretation of the materials of the manuscript. Based on the results of the review of the manuscript, the reviewer makes recommendations on the future fate of the article (each decision of the reviewer must be justified)

  • accept the manuscript for publication in this form;
  • accept the manuscript for publication after correcting the shortcomings noted by the reviewer;
  • reject the manuscript;
  • recommend sending the manuscript to a journal of a different profile.

The editorial board of the journal sends the text of the review to the author. If there are recommendations for the revision of the manuscript, the editorial board suggests taking them into account when preparing a new version of the manuscript.

In case of disagreement with any recommendations (comments) in the response letter to the reviewers, the authors should clearly explain the reason for refusing to make the appropriate corrections (additions).

The manuscript revised by the author is re-sent for review.

If the author and the reviewer have unsolvable contradictions regarding the manuscript, the editorial board has the right to send the manuscript for consideration to another reviewer.

If the authors refuse to finalize the materials, they must notify the editorial office in writing or orally of their refusal to publish the article. If the authors do not return the revised version after 3 months from the date of sending the review, even if there is no information from the authors with a refusal to finalize the article, the editorial board removes it from the register. In such situations, the authors are sent a corresponding notification about the withdrawal of the manuscript from registration due to the expiration of the period allotted for revision.

The presence of a positive review is not a sufficient reason for the publication of the article. The final decision on the publication is made by the editorial board. In conflict situations, the decision is made by the editor-in-chief.

After the editorial board of the journal makes a decision on the admission of the manuscript for publication, the editorial board informs the author about this and specifies the publication dates.

The decision to refuse to publish a manuscript is made at a meeting of the editorial board in accordance with the recommendations of the reviewers. The message about the refusal of publication is sent to the author by e-mail, the letter contains reviews and grounds for refusal of publication. A manuscript that is not recommended for publication by the decision of the editorial board is not accepted for re-consideration.

The original reviews are kept in the editorial office of the journal for at least 5 years.

Reviews of manuscripts are not published in the public domain and are used only in the internal document flow of the editorial office, as well as when communicating with the authors.
