Author Guidelines

Dear authors,

We invite you to check the Article Submission Guidelines and the Sample of the Article Design

Register your ORCID and ResearcherID

The fee for the article publication is not charged, royalties are not paid.

Stage I. Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript can be done both electronically via the Journal’s website (Open Journal System) and in hard copy by post with a subsequent request for an electronic version of the manuscript. In case of submitting a manuscript via the Open Journal System (OJS), authors will have access to all versions of their manuscript (when submitting, accepting, and publishing). The OJS allows you to trace the cycle of your article from submission to publication.

By submitting the manuscript to Lesnoy Zhurnal (Russian Forestry Journal) the author provides certain rights under the license agreement to use the article, guarantees its originality, submission of the manuscript to the sole publisher only, as well as following the procedures for the use of borrowed materials.

According to the requirements listed below, the author(s) should submit the manuscript (MS Word) accompanied by supporting documents (PDF or JPG) and send it to the editorial office by e-mail forest@narfu.ru. Then the article is assigned a registration number. The original supporting documents should be sent to the editorial office by post.

If the article does not meet the requirements, the author is sent a rejection to accept the article as non-compliant with the formal requirements without specifying the reasons for non-compliance. The editorial board does not enter into correspondence with authors on the issues of the article design; a detailed description of the requirements is posted on the website of the journal. The author has the right to improve the manuscript and resubmit it for consideration.

The documents to be sent to the editorial office:

– License agreement, which should be filled in by hand with a blue ink pen, duplex printing;

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication of the article according to the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0);

Cover letter.

Stage II. Preliminary examination and double-blind peer reviewing

Manuscripts sent to the editorial office are not returned.

All articles are tested by the Plagiarism Checker Antiplagiat, preliminary examination, and double-blind peer reviewing by at least two reviewers – the experts on a subject of the article (see: Regulations on Peer Reviewing).

Preliminary examination of the manuscript by the editorial board

The registered manuscript is submitted for discussion to the editorial board, where a collegial decision is made:

 - positive (the manuscript is accepted for review with the assignment of reviewers);
- negative.

If the decision of the editorial board is negative, the author is sent a notice of rejection to publish based on the decision of the editorial board. Only the general reason for the rejection is reported (does not meet the requirements in terms of subject, scientific level, novelty, depth of research). Neither the Editorial Board nor its members enter into correspondence on the rejection.

Stage III. Working on the reviewer's comments

After receiving a review of the article, the author is sent a notification on it. All correspondence between the author and the reviewer is held by the journal’s editorial office and is strictly recorded.

If the review is negative, the author is informed that his/her article has been rejected and cannot be published in the journal. The editorial team does not enter into further correspondence.

In case the article requires revision according to the comments of the reviewers, the author will be sent copies of reviews to the e-mail indicated in the article. The author within no more than 14 calendar days (at the request of the author the period can be extended up to 30 days) have to submit an edited text of the article, taking into account the reviewer’s comments. Failure to meet the deadline for revision is a reason for rejecting the article for further consideration. In case of partial or complete neglection of the reviewer’s comments, it is assumed that the article also did not pass the reviewing stage, about which the author gets a notice. Together with the revised article the author necessarily sends a letter to the reviewer, which contains answers to all the comments and explanations for changes and additions made in the article. At that the reviewing stage is over, the article is submitted for discussion by the editorial board; a positive review is not a sufficient warranty for publication of the article. The final decision remains with the editorial board. If the decision of the editorial board is negative, the author is sent a notice of rejection of publication based on the decision of the editorial board. A general reason for the rejection is given without specifying the details.

Stage IV. Preparing the article for publication

The decision to accept articles for publication in the journal is taken at a meeting of the editorial board of the journal. Each issue of the scientific journal is formed of the articles accepted for publication in the order of their submission to the editorial office. Before publication, the article again passes the stage of checking for borrowings.

The editorial team has the right of editing the manuscript, which is agreed upon with the corresponding author at the proofreading stage.

The proof sheet of the article is sent to the authors by e-mail. The errors found in the article should be reported to the editor Darya S. Orlova by d.orlova@narfu.ru no later than 3 days after receiving the proofreading.

Stage V. Article Publication

After the publication of the article in the journal, the author is entitled to get a copy of the issue. On all issues please contact Tatyana G. Tagaeva by t.tagaeva@narfu.ru.

Article Submission Guidelines

The matter of the article should be formatted clearly and decorated according to the standards adopted by the journal. The title page should have following mandatory elements: UDC code; a title of an article; surname and initials of the author(s); academic degree / title of the author(s); the name of the organization, place of employment (full postal address); E-mail address; an abstract, reflecting the main content of the work and results of the study.

The title of the article should be informative (SciVerse Scopus considers this requirement in the expert system as one of the key requirements). Only standard abbreviations can be used in the title.

Information about the author(s): name, surname, patronymic, scientific degree, rank; place of employment (the official name of the organization and its e-mail address); e-mail address.

The use of abbreviations or acronyms in the title of the organization contributes to the loss of articles when taking into account the publications of the organization, especially if the abbreviation is not common one.

The components of the name of organizations in front of the main company name, denoting the agency affiliation, form of ownership, organization status ("Institution of the Russian Academy of Science...", "Federal State Unitary Enterprise...", "FSEI HPE...", " National Research...", etc.) are not recommended as they make it difficult to identify the organization.

The abstract (summary) should be:

  • informative (do not provide common words);
  • original;
  • content (reflecting the main content of the article and the results of studies);
  • structured (follow the logic of the results description in the paper);
  • volume: 200–250 words (for the Russian publications a larger volume is preferred).

The abstract includes the following aspects of the content of the article:

  • the subject, the work objective;
  • method or methodology of the work;
  • results of the work;
  • scope of the results;
  • conclusions.

The abstract (summary) performs the following functions:

  • provides the information about the article, makes it possible to determine its relevance;
  • eliminates the need to read the full text, if the document is of the secondary interest for the reader;
  • it is a major source of information in national and international information systems and databases, indexing the journal.

The subject, topic, work objective are specified, if they are not clear from the article title.

The method or methodology of the work is advisable to be described, if they present the novelty or are of interest from the point of view of this work. The sources of data and the nature of their treatment should be indicated in the abstracts of articles, describing the experimental works.

The results of the work should be described very accurately and informatively. The basic theoretical and experimental results, experimental data, interconnections and patterns should be indicated. New results and data of long-term values, important discoveries, findings that refute the existing theories, and data of practical importance are preferred.

Conclusions may be accompanied by recommendations, estimates, suggestions, hypotheses, described in the article.

The information contained in the title of the article should not be repeated in the text of the abstract (summary). The opening phrases, such as "the author of the article considers ..." are unadvisable.

Historical references, description of previously published works and well-known positions should not be given in the abstract (summary).

The abstract should contain meaningful words from the paper text, syntactic constructions inherent to the language of scientific and technical documents, avoid of complex grammatical structures.

The text should be connected; disconnected positions should logically follow from another one. Abbreviations and symbols can be used in the abstract in exceptional cases; the references to the publication number in the list of references should not be indicated.

Keywords (up to 10 words) are the certain words from the text, which can help to evaluate and search an article. Words and phrases can be used as the keywords.

Full biographical information for the website of the journal in Russian and English includes the last name, first name, date of birth and graduation, the name of the university, academic degree, title, position, place of work, the number of publications and the field of research.

The logical structure of the paper

The text of the article should be standardized, using subtitles. The article suggests the following sections (subsections - if applicable): introduction, methods of research, the results of research and their discussion, conclusion, references. The introduction and conclusion should not duplicate each other.

The author should start with the posing of the problem, in the context of which it is necessary to mention the results obtained previously. The goals should be stated very clearly. The experimental part is recommended to allocate to a separate logical unit. Description of the experiments should be explained in detail to reconstruct them. Experimental data should be systematized in the form of tables and figures. Tables, graphs, figures are intended to confirm the text material, so there is no need to duplicate their content in the text.

Experimental data and calculations, that are not related to the problems of the work directly, should not be cited. The theoretical and experimental results are to be described in the conclusions in the form of thesis. Conclusions should not repeat the abstract. A list of references and the date of receipt are placed at the end of the article.

All abbreviations, given in the text, should be defined at their first mention. The system of units of measurements is to be used.

Preparation of illustrative material

Illustrations and tables should be included in the text of the article. Inscriptions, cluttering up the picture, are to be replaced by figures or letters, which must be explained in the figure captions; graphs axis must be accompanied by slogans reflecting their essence. Dimensions of letters and numbers should be proportional to the size of the figure. All illustrations and tables should have the appropriate references in the text.

 References

The list of references should be designed according to the requirements of the RF State Standard 7.05.–2008 and compiled in the alphabetical order (first native, then foreign authors). The works of foreign authors must comprise be at least 30-40 % of the list of references. Bibliographic references in the text to the literary source number are indicated in brackets. At least 20 literary sources are recommended to use in the article; and no less than 70 sources – for scientific reviews. All authors should be mentioned in the description of the literary source. The correct description of the sources used in the reference is the guarantee that the cited publication will be taken into account when assessing the scientific work of its authors, organization, country.

References to publications in electronic scientific journals are valid if they are registered in the Scientific and Technical center "Information registry" in a manner consistent with the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Education and Science.

All the authors should sign their names after the references.

The editors reserve the right to make reductions and editorial changes in the manuscript.

Preparation of the electronic text

The article file can be submitted on an electronic media or sent via e-mail. The electronic version of the article is performed in the text editor Microsoft Word, font 14, Times New Roman, line spacing – a factor of 1.2, the fields (left, right, top, bottom) – 2 cm. The illustrations are presented in PDF and Excel formats with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Formulas are typed in Word for Windows. The authors should number the formulas, for which the references are made in the text. The sequence number is to be placed in parentheses to the right of the formula.

The file name indicates the name and initials of the author. All pages of the manuscript are numbered consecutively. Serial numbers of the pages are put in the middle of the head margin of the page in Arabic numerals.

Design of metadata in English

Metadata in English are located at the end of the article after the date of receipt of the article and in the same manner as in the Russian variant (article title, author's names, initials, academic degree, rank, information of organization (the official name, postal address); e-mail address, abstract, keywords, references and the date of receipt of the article in English).

The names of the authors are to be represented in the Latin alphabet in one of the commonly accepted international transliteration systems – BGN.

The site BSI and BGN can help to transliterate the Russian text into Latin.

The information about the organization should be structured in the following order: the name of the organization, street, house, city, postal code, country.

Translated name of the organization should be accepted, taken from the official sources. The exception is the names of the companies untranslatable into the English language. These names should be given in the transliterated version. At the end of the list of organizations the e-mail address of the authors is specified, for example:

National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Kashirskoe sh., 31, Moscow, 115409, Russian Federation

Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia, ul. Lenina, 4A, Korolev, Moscow oblast, 141070, Russian Federation; e-mail: VNYurov@mephi.ru

The titles of the articles, translated into English, should not contain transliterated words, except for the untranslatable proper names, instruments and other objects, that have their own names. Do not use the untranslatable technical language, known only to the Russian-speaking professionals.

Abstract is the main source of information in the foreign information systems and databases. Do not translate the abstract word for word; you should observe the basic rules and the style of the English language.

References in the Latin alphabet should be located separately from the Russian list of references. It is not allowed mixing the Russian and English parts in one link, as well as syncopating the Russian list of literature, transferring all the English-language links to the References. Foreign links are to be repeated in both lists of references.

We introduce the list of free programs to create the internationally accepted bibliographic descriptions in Latin: BSI and BGN.
