The journal was created on the basis of the decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, adopted on July 1, 1950 (shortly after the well-known discussion on linguistics in the Pravda newspaper in May-June 1950). Published under the guidance of the Department of Historical and Philological Sciences RAN. The editors are trying to preserve the established traditions of the journal and the circle of its authors, to give a representative picture of the development of different areas of the science of language, both in Russia and in the world. The subject of the journal: theory of language, areal, typological and comparative historical study of the world's languages, as well as sociolinguistics , corpus and computational linguistics, psycholinguistics and related disciplines
