Abstract
The nitriding of a grade 45 carbon steel with a zinc-filled coating (ZFC), which was preliminary formed by cold galvanizing, is considered. The microstructure and the chemical and phase compositions of the modified layer are studied experimentally. It is found that the nitriding leads to the formation of a transition zone in the steel substrate, which is located under ZFC and results from the diffusion of zinc and nitrogen in iron.
