Abstract
Optimal conditions for laser hardening of punching tools made of a steel Kh12M are selected. Leading edges should be hardened under surface micromelting conditions. A laser fused layer should be ground after the treatment, controlling the metal removal thickness. Tests demonstrated a 2–4 increase in the service life of punching dies after laser thermal treatment.
