The Redescription of Eumicrotremus brashnikowi with Remarks on Validity of E. phrynoides (Cyclopteridae, Cottoidei)

Abstract

The second specimen of Eumicrotremus brashnikowi was found in collection materials of ZIN RAS. The species was placed in the genus Eumicrotremus on the basis of the following diagnostic characters: bone plaques spread all over head and body, including caudal peduncle; two pores in the infraorbital canal of the seismosensory system; pores of the seismosensory system are situated on the ends of long skin tubules on the chin and the lower part of a gill cover. The validity of E. brashnikowi is confirmed by the presence of bone plaques in the form of flat plates covered with very thin and short bone spines forming the rosette. The similar structure of bone plaques was not revealed in juveniles and adult specimens of other species of the genus Eumicrotremus. The redescription of E. brashnikowi is carried out. The considerable similarity of the external skeleton structure of E. brashnikowi and E. phrynoidesis is confirmed. The synonymy of E. phrynoidesis and E. asperrimus is not supported.

Comments on the Mond Scraper, Capoeta mandica (Teleostei: Cyprinidae): Re-Description, Molecular Systematics and Distribution Modeling

Abstract

Capoeta mandica was originally described as C. barroisi mandica from Mond River, Persian Gulf basin, based on morphological characters and later was considered as a distinct species based on a few small specimens. However, there is still controversial debate about its systematic position and morphological characters. To resolve the issue, new collected specimens from Iranian drainage basins examined morphologically and molecularly. Results revealed that C. mandica is a distinct taxon in the Capoeta trutta group. This taxon confirms the zoogeographical separation of the Persis basin (southern Iran) by the rise in post-Pleistocene sea level, isolating rivers from the Tigris-Euphrates and western basins.

New Data on the Distribution of Lamprey Petromyzon marinus and Lethenteron camtschaticum (Petromyzontidae) in Barents and White Seas

Abstract

Information about the sites of catches of the sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus in the western Barents Sea and Arctic lamprey Lethenteron camtschaticum in the Barents and White seas is presented based on the data of trawl surveys performed in 2004−2016. It is demonstrated that sea lamprey is occasionally encountered in the western Barents Sea; nine specimens have been recorded during the entire period of surveys. The northernmost point of a capture of sea lamprey is located near 76° N and the easternmost point is at 31°15′ E. Arctic lamprey is not numerous in the Barents and White seas; a total of 66 and 17 specimens have been caught, respectively. Its local aggregations are found in the southeastern part of the Barents Sea and in Dvina Bay in the White Sea. Arctic lamprey penetrates to the north to 76° N and into the central part of the Barents Sea.

Distribution and Biological Characteristics of Couch’s Goby Gobius couchi (Gobiidae), a New Species for the Black Sea

Abstract

Couch’s goby Gobius couchi was found for the first time off the southwestern coast of Crimea, in the coves of Sevastopol. Earlier, this goby was not noted in the Black Sea; its range included the Atlantic coasts of England and Ireland and the northeastern part of Mediterranean and Aegean seas. The present paper provides the description of the morphological characteristics of Couch’s goby, including the diagnostic features, the data on its distribution near the Crimean coasts, and some features of ecology and behavior. The data on fecundity and time of reproduction of this goby are presented for the first time. It is suggested that the appearance of Couch’s goby near the Crimean coasts is determined by the process of “Mediterranization” of the Black Sea.

First Record of African Angel Shark, Squatina africana (Chondricthyes: Squatinidae) in Indian Waters, Confirmed by DNA Barcoding

Abstract

A single specimen of African angel shark, Squatina africana (Regan, 1908) was caught off Lakshadweep (11°5′47″ N; 72°2′21″ E), India in September 2016. The present study is a new report of the above species from Indian waters. In addition to classical methodologies, DNA barcoding was also adopted for species identification. The 650 bp-long region of mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I was sequenced to obtain the DNA barcode for the species under study. The sequence divergence value within species and between species was calculated using MEGA V.7.0, where Kimura 2 parameter (k2p) model was chosen as a distance model. The average k2p distance separating individuals within species was 1.76% and inter specific divergence was 8–10%. A neighbour joining network was constructed to provide a graphical representation of divergence between the species. Using the maximum identity with Gen Bank database, K2P divergence distance, NJ-network and traditional morphological approach, we could identify the given specimen as a mature male African angel shark.

Morphological and Genetic Traits of Pikeperch Sander lucioperca of the Volga–Akhtuba Aquatic System: on the Spatial Structure of a Species in the Lower Volga Basin

Abstract

Characters of external morphology and ten loci of microsatellite DNA are investigated in pikeperch Sander lucioperca from the Volga–Akhtuba water system on sites of the Akhtuba and the Volga situated 150 km from the beginning of the Volga Delta and 300 km from the dam of the Volgograd Power Plant. Significant differences in plastic characters are found between samples from the Akhtuba and the Volga. Differences are also found in the genetic diversity of pikeperch: the found alleles are more numerous in most loci and the mean value of allele diversity is higher in the sample from the Akhtuba. At the same time, the calculated distance between samples of pikeperch is not certain. However, this may follow from limitations accompanying the calculation of differentiation parameters. The allele diversity and heterosis of pikeperch from the Akhtuba and the Volga are higher than those in populations from the Baltic basin and Western Europe. The known differences in external morphology and in genetic characters indicate to the present day partial separation of the Volga pikeperch from the Akhtuba pikeperch and that the found polymorphism of morphological and genetic characters reflects the ecological plasticity of the species, which is an adaptive response to changing environmental conditions.

Evolution of the Charrs, Genus Salvelinus (Salmonidae). 2. Sympatric Inner-lake Diversification (Ecological Peculiarities and Evolutionary Mechanisms Illustrated by Different Groups of Fish)

Abstract

To date a considerable amount of data on sympatric diversification of the laсustrine fish has been accumulated and many important advances made. However, the evolutionary mechanisms of the process still remain unclear. The paper discusses fish polymorphism in the water bodies of different latitudes, but the major focus is the question of sympatry in the charrs of the genus Salvelinus across the northern lakes. Numerous cases of diversification were comparatively analyzed, which provides evidence for the existence of several main pathways of evolutionary process. The pathways are controlled by environmental factors, which determine the structure of the lake ecosystems in the northern latitudes.

On the Origin of the Lacustrine Charr Salvelinus alpinus Complex from the Kolyma and Sea of Okhotsk Basins

Abstract

Morphological and genetic characteristics are used for the analysis of the origin of charrs from the lakes of the Kolyma basin (Chuk, Gek, Gulyaevskoe-4, Gulyaevskoe-6, and Lenkovoe) and the Sea of Okhotsk basin (Lake Chistoe). In addition to these samples, the fragments of the control region of mitochondrial DNA (CR mtDNA, 550-bp) and exon 2 of recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1, 899-bp) are sequenced in the charrs from lakes Dzhul’etta and Cherechen’ (Kolyma basin) and lakes Elikchanskie, Bol’shoi Mak-Mak, Ueginskoe (Sea of Okhotsk basin), Ulakhan-Silyan-Kyuel’ (Yana River basin) as well as in northern Dolly Varden from the Kamchatka River. The charr from Lake Chistoe is represented by northern Dolly Varden. In the charrs from lakes Chuk, Gek, Gulyaevskoe-4, Gulyaevskoe-6, Lenkovoe, Cherechen’, Elikchanskie, Bol’shoi Mak-Mak, and Ueginskoe, the haplotypes of mtDNA of the Bering group (a haplogroup of northern Dolly Varden) are revealed. Based on the morphological and RAG1 data, populations of charrs from these lakes belong to the Salvelinus alpinus complex. A transfer of mtDNA of northern Dolly Varden to the charrs from the Kolyma and Sea of Okhotsk basins occurred during the last postglacial expansion and subsequent hybridization. Based on the results of morphological and genetic analysis, the charrs from the Kolyma and Sea of Okhotsk basins cannot be unambiguously referred to the phylogenetic groups of Eurasian Arctic charr or Taranets charr. The presence of mtDNA haplotypes of the Arctic group (a haplogroup of Taranets charr) in the populations of lakes Dzhul’etta, Maksi, and Ueginskoe shows a possibility of their belonging to the group of Taranets charr.

Variation of Freckled Goatfish Upeneus tragula (Mullidae): Color Morphs off Hon Thom (Gulf of Thailand, South China Sea)

Abstract

Two color morphs of freckled goatfish Upeneus tragula with different Vietnamese names and mainly black and red body coloration of fresh dead exemplars are found off Hon Thóm (Thom Island), the largest island of An Thoi Archipelago located to the south of Phu Quoc Island, Gulf of Thailand, South China Sea. The presence of the morphs may be connected with the occurrence of two sympatric stocks or with color variation within a single stock. To test these hypotheses, red color content on the body (based on digital analysis of images) and gonadal condition is compared in both morphs. Body coloration does not depend on the sex of the fish. The black morph differs from the red morph in a smaller body size (12.7 vs. 16.4 cm FL on average), and it is represented by mainly immature individuals of both sexes (mean gonadosomatic index of the females 0.5 vs. 2.0%). It is proposed that the change of body coloration is associated with sexual maturation, and it occurs in the ontogeny within a single stock.

State of the Ichthyoplankton Community along the Crimean Peninsula in August 2011

Abstract

Data on species composition, spatial distribution of ichthyoplankton, and feeding of fish larvae in August 2011 are presented for the shelf and the open waters along the Crimean Peninsula from Kerch Strait to Karkinit Bay. In the ichthyoplankton, fish eggs and larvae represented 19 species from 16 families. The average egg abundance was 111 egg/m2 and larvae abundance was 22 ind./m2. The elimination ratio of the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, which dominates in the plankton from the final stages of development to the prelarvae in 2011, was similar to that observed in 1957. The high number of larvae of the older age group in the western halistatic zone is explained by the peculiarities of the hydrological regime. Decrease in the pressure of predatory jelly macroplankton and an fodder zooplankton (zooplankton abundance) contribute to the survival of the fish larvae.

Growth and Age of the Roughhead Grenadier Macrourus berglax in Waters off Southwest Greenland

Abstract

Data on the age and growth of the roughhead grenadier Macrourus berglax from waters off Southwest Greenland have been obtained based on the analysis of otoliths. Specimens with a preanal length of 5−39 cm, a weight of 7−5275 g, and age from 2 to 22 years are recorded in trawl catches. Roughhead grenadier exhibits a similar rate of linear growth in waters off Southwest Greenland and other parts of the range in the Northwest Atlantic. No considerable differences from the rate of the linear growth calculated earlier from scales for the species in waters off West Greenland have been found. In the recent period, the rate of weight gain in roughhead grenadier in waters off Southwest Greenland has been lower than in the Northwest Atlantic in the first half of the 1980s. The age of mass maturation in males (7–9 years) and females (16–17 years) in waters off West and East Greenland is somewhat higher than in coastal waters of Norway and the Northwest Atlantic.

Sexual Dimorphism and Length–Weight Relationship of the Hairy Conger Eel Bassanago albescens (Anguilliformes: Congridae)

Abstract

The present study reports the first reference on length-weight relationships (LWR) and sexual dimorphism for Bassanago albecens, caught as bycatch in the commercial fishery in the Argentine continental shelf. A total of 91 conger eels were examined. Female specimens (ranged from 371 to 661 mm total length—TL) have body length larger than males (from 396 to 537 mm TL), but the length-weight relationships allometry coefficient was 3.76 for both sexes. Three out of seven morphometric measurements differed between sexes, in particular head size characteristics. These biometric data and their relationships are relevant to the management and conservation of fish diversity and fisheries.

Saddleback Deformities in Fish Species Collected from the Arabian Gulf Coast of Jubail City, Saudi Arabia

Abstract

The saddleback syndromes were observed in several commercial fishes obtained from Saudi Arabian coast of the Arabian Gulf. These deformities resulting in missing dorsal spines or rays, sometimes accompanied by a depression in the dorsal profile, were found in ten fish species from seven families. Other morphological abnormalities such as scale disturbances, lateral line deformity, and kyphosis, the presence of a lesion, slight ambicoloration, and supraneural deformities accompanying the saddleback deformity were also observed. The occurrence of similar deformities across such a spectrum of fishes from the same location suggests that the abnormalities were induced by something in the environment common to all these species.

Local and Temporal Variation at the MHC I-A1 Locus in Pink Salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha of Southern Sakhalin

Abstract

In order to test the MHC I-A1 locus of the main histocompatiblity complex as an effective molecular marker for identification of populations of Far Eastern pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, the comparison of the allelic and genotypic frequencies between two neighboring populations of the Lyutoga and Taranay rivers (Aniva Bay, Sakhalin Island), as well as within the populations: within generation, between adjacent and distant generations, have been performed. It was revealed that temporal variation at MHC I-A1 is statistically insignificant in comparison between the samples of the juveniles sampled at different times during the downstream migration. It is also insignificant between the samples of juvenile and adult fish of the same generation, and between samples divided by a single and seven generations. At the same time, the samples of neighboring populations differ significantly. The possibility of differentiation of the populations on the local scale and temporal stability of the allele frequencies indicate the MHC I-A1 as valuable marker for the development of the population data bases. Inclusion of the MHC I-A1 into the panel of other markers (microsatellites, in particular) allows for considerable increase in the resolution power for identification as to which population an individual in the mixed sea catch belongs.

Estimation of Surfagon Influence on the Gonadal State of Rainbow Trout Parasalmo mykiss (=Oncorhynchus mykiss) Juveniles at the Background of Temperature Stress

Abstract

Regulatory effect of surfagon—a synthetic analog of gonadotropin-releasing hormone—on the gonad state of rainbow trout (Kamchatka steelhead Parasalmo mykiss (=Oncorhynchus mykiss)) juveniles is investigated. The juveniles were 2.5 months old and were exposed to brief (4 days) heat stress (19–20°C). The increase of water temperature was followed by anomalies of gonads after 1 month (destruction of sex cells and hypertrophy of connective tissue). In females, the increased water temperature activates sex redetermination: in ovaries, cysts containing destroyed spermatogonia are found. In 1.5 months, the exogenous application of surfagon was followed by acceleration of spermatogenesis in gonads of experimental fish (2.5 months old) and by a slight decrease of fraction of anomalies in structure of their testes compared with the gonads of fish not exposed to surfagon. Exposure of rainbow trout to surfagon prior to sex differentiation is more efficient than after it is completed.

Confirmed occurrence of the Cusk-eel Ophidion barbatum (Osteichthyes: Ophidiidae) from the Coast of Tunisia (Central Mediterranean)

Abstract

This paper reports the second record but also the first substantiated record of cusk-eel Ophidion barbatum (Linnaeus, 1758) from the northern coast of Tunisia, 168 mm in total length and weighing 18.3 g. The specimen is described including morphometric measurements and counts. Differences from its close relative species O. rochei (Linnaeus, 1758) are pointed out that confirm the occurrence of O barbatum in the Tunisian waters. This finding constitutes the northernmost extension range of the species in the area.

Migrations of Fish in Lake Glubokoе

Abstract

Daily and seasonal cyclicity, directivity, and area of the fish migration in the main ecological zones of Lake Glubokoe have been revealed with the help of hydroacoustic complexes. Mass appearance of fish in the epipelagial and profundal of the water body is observed at dusk and at night, and they return to the littoral and sublittoral with the dawn. In the summer, vertical migrations of fish occur mainly in the near-surface layers of the water column, and the fish also occupy the profundal in late autumn.
