In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR dated July 31, 1957, the publication of the series "News of Higher Educational Institutions" was launched, including the journal "Geology and Exploration", the first issue of which was published in January 1958. The founder of the journal was the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR. The publisher was the Moscow State Geological Prospecting Institute - now the "Sergo Ordzhonikidze Russian State Geological Prospecting University" (MGRI).

Since September 18, 2014, the founder and publisher of the journal "News of Higher Educational Institutions. Geology and Exploration" is the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Sergo Ordzhonikidze Russian State Geological Prospecting University" (MGRI).
