Phylogeny and taxonomy of casebearer moths (Lepidoptera, Coleophoridae) based on morphological and molecular genetic data. 2. Reconstruction of divergence time for major taxa of Coleophoridae based on COI gene variability

Anikin V., Dyomin A., Knushevitskaya M.

Resumo

Reconstruction of divergence time for major taxa of the family Coleophoridae showed casebearer moths to be evolutionarily young, probably due to the formation of the first taxa of the family in a specific environment of grassland ecosystems during the Eocene–Oligocene. Analysis of evolutionary divergence of species indicated that the ancestors of modern taxa of the subfamily Coleophorinae lived in the early Oligocene and were probably associated with herbaceous plants of the families Amaranthaceae, Fabaceae, and Asteraceae. In general, the most active speciation among casebearer moths occurred in the late Miocene, possibly due to the increasing diversity of habitats and active changes of woody and herbaceous plant formations in the Ancient Mediterranean during that historical period.

Specific features of the life cycle of Pterostichus melanarius (Coleoptera, Carabidae) in mosaic floodplain meadows

Trushitsyna O., Matalin A.

Resumo

Some features of the spatial and temporal distribution of Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger, 1798) in a mosaic of meadow floodplain landscape, as well as its habitat and interannual variations of its life cycle, are discussed. In the studied landscape, P. melanarius preferred flooded meadows of the medium and low levels that were residential for this species during three years of research. In most habitats, the annual life cycle was successively replaced by the facultative and then by the obligate biennial life cycle, primarily due to interannual variations in the hydrological and temperature regimes. The transformation of the life cycle and redistribution of individuals between adjacent habitats appear to determine the interannual fluctuations in the abundance of P. melanarius. The age heterogeneity of the local populations also contributes to maintaining the total abundance at a relatively stable level.

Colony productivity of Polistes dominula (Christ) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae: Polistinae) wasps nesting on plants by haplometrosis: Regression analysis

Rusina L., Ghazali M., Firman L.

Resumo

The paper presents the results of analysis of the relationships of various colony characteristics in the resocial wasp Polistes dominula nesting on plants in the south of Ukraine (Kherson Province, the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve) in 2003–2007. The number of future foundresses and nest size at the end of the life cycle depend on the queen longevity and on the number of workers in the colony. The number of males reared in the colony is positively correlated with the nest size (the number of cells) and negatively correlated with the queen longevity. An increase in the share of the brood infested by the parasitoids Latibulus argiolus (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) and Elasmus schmitti (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) results in a smaller nest size and a smaller number of males reared.

Long-term dynamics of the species composition of herpetobiont and hortobiont beetles (Coleoptera) in the Galichya Gora Nature Reserve

Tsurikov M.

Resumo

A long-term study of the species composition of adult beetles (Coleoptera) was performed in the Morozova Gora locality (the Galichya Gora Nature Reserve, Lipetsk Province, Russia). From 1995 to 2005, a total of 23 683 ind. of 545 species from 57 families were captured in the migration trap, i.e., a system of 10 pitfall traps connected by guide barriers. Net-sweeping of the herbage in the steppe, oak grove, and meadow yielded 9048 ind. of 383 species from 33 families. The species composition of herpetobiont beetles was shown to change gradually in time, while that of inhabitants of the herbage layer changed sharply from year to year. The abundance dynamics patterns varied greatly between species and habitats.

New data on the subfamily Epilamprinae (Dictyoptera, Blaberidae) of the New World, with description of a new genus and a new species from Ecuador

Anisyutkin L.

Resumo

Detailed morphological redescriptions of cockroaches of the subfamily Epilamprinae Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1865 from the New World based on the collection of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences are given. Poeciloderrhis verticalis (Burmeister, 1838), the type species of the genus Poeciloderrhis Stål, 1874; Phoraspis picta (Drury, 1782), the type species of the genus Phoraspis Serville, 1831; Epilampra mexicana Saussure, 1862 and E. sodalis Walker, 1868, the members of the “mexicana” and “sodalis” species-groups, respectively, are redescribed. Parapoeciloderrhis dilatatus Anisyutkin, gen. et sp. n. is described from Ecuador. The paper pays special attention to the structures of the male and female genitalia. The hypothetical relationships between the taxa studied are briefly considered. The possible synapomorphies of the group [Poeciloderrhis, Epilampra, and Phoraspis] are considered. The genus Epilampra is possibly artificial and needs division into several genera.

A new species of the genus Eusarima Yang (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea: Issidae) from Pakistan

Gnezdilov V.

Resumo

Eusarima albifrons sp. n. is described from northern Pakistan (Islamabad). The new species is closely related to Eu. iranica Gnezdilov et Mozaffarian, 2011 and may be distinguished by details of coloration and male genital structure. This is the second species of the genus Eusarima Yang recorded from the Western Palaearctic. Parasarima triphylla Che, Zhang et Wang, 2012 is transferred to the genus Eusarima, which is thus recorded for the first time from continental China. The homologies in the genital structures of males and females are discussed for some genera of Oriental, Palaearctic, and Afrotropical Issidae.

Xylobiont flies of the genus Xylomya Rondani, 1861 (Diptera, Xylomyidae) from Russia

Krivosheina N.

Resumo

The essential diagnostic characters of the adults and larvae of four Xylomya species are discussed. The female of X. sordida (Pl.) is redescribed based on the holotype. The previously unknown larva and female of X. yasumatsui (Nag. et Tan.) are described, and the descriptions of X. maculata (Meig.), X. moiwana Mats., and X. czekanovskii (Pl.) are supplemented. The structure of the antenna and frontal pubescence are shown to be the main diagnostic characters for the adults. For the larvae, these are the structure and coloration of the integument and the morphology of the plate of the posterior spiracular cleft. Keys to the larvae and adults are given for four species of the Russian fauna.
