Study of Uridine Effect on the Development of Audiogenic Tonic Seizures in Krushinsky–Molodkina Strain Rats
摘要
The latency of tonic seizure in response to loud sound (in rats of the Krushinsky–Molodkina strain with audiogenic epilepsy) had been slightly (although statistically significantly) longer after chronic uridine injections (100 mg/kg, i.p., three times a day during 9 or 12 days). The recovery time from the tonic seizure was shorter after 12 days of injections in comparison to the 9-day injection period. At the same time, the intensity of tonic seizures provoked by loud sound did not change after chronic uridine injections. The lack of uridine anticonvulsive effect demonstrated in the audiogenic epilepsy model contradicts the anticonvulsant effects of uridine in experiments with other seizure models, in which the epileptic foci were localized in the forebrain structures.

Evaluation of Individual Risk Factors of Alcohol Preference in Rats
摘要
We evaluated individual risk factors of the development of alcohol preference in a model of voluntary alcohol consumption. Drinking behavior was estimated in the two-bottle test, and other behavioral features were studied in the open field test, test for social interaction, and marble burying test. The low adaptive capacity of an animal, which was manifested in a shorter time spent in the center of the open field, and low consumption of ethanol when the animal first tasted it were the leading factors of the subsequent preference of alcohol under the conditions of free choice.

The Effects of Weak Static Magnetic Field on the Development of Organotypic Tissue Culture in Rats
摘要
The effects of weak static magnetic field on the organotypic tissue culture of the rat cerebral cortex, liver, and spleen have been investigated. Exposure to a 200 μT static magnetic field induces tissue development, leading to the intensification of regeneration processes compared to the control explants.

Influence of the Background Noise on Recognition of Signals with a Complex Spectrum Structure in the Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)
摘要
The frequency resolving power of hearing (FRP) of the beluga whale Delphinapterus leucas was studied as dependent on influence of lasting low-intensity sounds (of the ultrasonic range from –20 to +10 dB). Testing of the spectrum ripple-phase reversal was used in conjunction with a noninvasive recording of auditory evoked potentials. FRP parameters were found to depend nonmonotonically on the intensity of the background noise. The resultant adaptation effects can be explained by the fact that, in response to the high-intensity signals, the auditory system sensitivity is reduced to the level optimal for analysis of these signals.

General Biology
Participation of the Green Algae Ulvaria obscura in Bioremediation of Sea Water from Oil Products
摘要
Participation of green algae in bioremediation of sea water from oil products (OPs) has been studied. Decrease in the content of OPs in water is accompanied by their accumulation by the alga Ulvaria obscura (Chlorophyta). It has been assumed that neutralization of OPs in Ulvaria occurs, similarly to Fucus vesiculosus (Phaeophyta), all over the thallome: destruction of OPs starts on the alga surface by epiphytic hydrocarbonoxidizing bacteria providing absorption and subsequent degradation of OPs by plant cells. The role of macrophytes in bioremediation of coastal areas from OPs is considerably higher than previously supposed.

Electric Organ Discharges of Cyphomyrus petherici (Mormyridae, Osteoglossiformes) from the White Nile Basin
摘要
The waveform and some characteristics of the electric organ discharges have been studied in 11 individuals of Cyphomyrus petherici, the only representative of the genus in the Nilotic fauna. The discharge is characterized by three to five phases with a prevalence of the second phase in terms of the relative amplitude and a wide variability of the total duration of discharge (from 212 to 558 μs). The comparison of the discharges of the species under study with those in the congeneric species and representatives of the genus Pollimyrus (which previously encompassed C. petherici) demonstrates a general similarity of the C. petherici discharges with those of Cyphomyrus, but not Pollimyrus. This is in agreement with the correspondence of the discharge characteristics observed in other mormyrids to the phylogenetic position and taxonomic status of the species.

Comparative Analysis of the Concentrations of Ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Cl‒) in the Blood of the Brown Trout Salmo trutta from Different Rivers
摘要
The contents of ions in the blood have been compared in three ecological groups of brown trout (parr, mature, and resident) living in rives of the basins of Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga. Brown trout from the Alats-oya (the Ladoga basin, remote from two other rivers belonging to the Onega Lake) is characterized by the lowest concentrations of the Na+, Ca2+, and Cl– ions in blood. The probable effect of the ion level in blood of brown trout on selection of life strategy is discussed.

Papillomatous Skin Netting of Cetaceans (Cetacea: Delphinapterus leucas, Balaena mysticetus, and Eschrichtius robustus) and Sirens (Sirenia: Trichechus manatus and Dugong dugon)
摘要
The structure of the papillomatous junction between epidermis and dermis (papillomatous netting, PN) in the skin of cetaceans (white whales, bowhead, and gray whales) and sirens (American manatee, dugong) was studied and compared using histophysiological and morphogeometric methods. The relative extent of PN development proved to be similar in members of both orders, but significant differences were found in PN configuration, the volume of “free area of grille”, the degree of skin vertical compression, and skin density, which influence buoyancy. The differences are discussed from the viewpoint of species biology.

Comparative Analysis of the Amino Acid Spectrum of Blood Plasma in Chiroptera (Vespertilio murinus L., 1758 and Myotis dasycneme B., 1825) in the Fauna of the Ural Mountains
摘要
The article presents the results of a new comparative analysis of free amino acids in the blood plasma of representatives of insectivorous Chiroptera (Mammalia: Vespertilionidae) in the fauna of the Ural Mountains: the pond bat (Myotis dasycneme Boie, 1825) and the parti-colored bat (Vespertilio murinus Linnaeus, 1758). This is the first study to show the species variability of free amino acids in resident and migratory species of bats from different ecosystems of the Ural Region.

A Finding of the Red Squirrel (Rodentia, Sciuridae, Sciurus vulgaris Linnaeus, 1758) and Forest Dormouse (Rodentia, Gliridae, Dryomys nitedula Linnaeus, 1778) in the Pleistocene of the Southern Urals
摘要
The study deals with a new sample of the mammalian fossils from the Pleistocene deposits of the Ignatievskaya Cave in Southern Urals (54°53' N, 57°46' E). Among the rodent fossils, the teeth of red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and forest dormouse (Dryomys nitedula) have been identified. The enamel differentiation quotient (SDQ) of the water vole teeth matches the Arvicola terrestris species from locations of the end of Middle and Late Pleistocene (oxygen isotope stages, OIS 6 and OIS 5–2, respectively). The high SDQ value for the water vole and the presence of the squirrel and dormouse in the fauna allow dating the finding near the end of the Middle Pleistocene and beginning of the Late Pleistocene (OIS 6 and OIS 5e, respectively). The widespread open and forest landscapes were inhabited by this fauna.
