On the constant and step in Jackson’s inequality for best approximations by trigonometric polynomials and by Haar polynomials
Аннотация
Two sharp results for best approximations of periodic functions are established in this paper. We prove the sharpness of the step of the modulus of continuity in Jackson’s inequality with least possible constant for approximations by trigonometric polynomials. We also prove the sharpness of the constants in a Jackson-type inequality for approximations by Haar polynomials in several variables.

Maxwell’s equations, the Euler index, and Morse theory
Аннотация
We show that the singularities of the Fresnel surface for Maxwell’s equation on an anisotrpic material can be accounted from purely topological considerations. The importance of these singularities is that they explain the phenomenon of conical refraction predicted by Hamilton. We show how to desingularise the Fresnel surface, which will allow us to use Morse theory to find lower bounds for the number of critical wave velocities inside the material under consideration. Finally, we propose a program to generalise the results obtained to the general case of hyperbolic differential operators on differentiable bundles.

On coincidence points of multivalued vector mappings of metric spaces
Аннотация
The notion of metric regularity can be extended to multivalued mappings acting in the products of metric spaces. A vector analog of Arutyunov’s coincidence-point theorem for two multivalued mappings is proved. Statements on the existence and estimates of solutions of systems of inclusions of special form occurring in the multiple fixed-point problem are obtained. In particular, these results imply some well-known double-point theorems.

We study the relationship between the strongly regular growth of an entire function f of order zero, the existence of the angular density of its zeros, the behavior of the Fourier coefficients of the logarithm of f, and the regular growth of the logarithm of the modulus and the argument of f in the Lp[0, 2π]-metric, p ≥ 1.

On the oscillation property of Green’s function of a fourth-order discontinuous boundary-value problem
Аннотация
The paper deals with conditions under which the Green function of a multipoint boundary-value problem for fourth-order equations describing small strains of a rod fastened to a solid elastic basement and additionally fixed by “concentrated” elastic supports at separate points has the oscillation property. It is shown that the condition that the Green function is positive is necessary and sufficient for the Green function to have the oscillation property.

For an arithmetic semigroup (G, ∂), we define entropy as a function on a naturally defined continuous semigroup Ĝ containing G. The construction is based on conditional maximization, which permits us to introduce the conjugate variables and the Lagrangian manifold corresponding to the semigroup (G, ∂).

Invariance of the order and type of a sequence of operators
Аннотация
In the paper, the invariance property of characteristics (the order and type) of an operator and of a sequence of operators with respect to a topological isomorphism is proved. These characteristics give precise upper and lower bounds for the expressions ‖An(x)‖p and enable one to state and solve problems of operator theory in locally convex spaces in a general setting. Examples of such problems are given by the completeness problem for the set of values of a vector function in a locally convex space, the structure problem for a subspace invariant with respect to an operator A, the problem of applicability of an operator series to a locally convex space, the theory of holomorphic operator-valued functions, the theory of operator and differential-operator equations in nonnormed spaces, and so on. However, the immediate evaluation of characteristics of operators (and of sequences of operators) directly by definition is practically unrealizable in spaces with more complicated structure than that of countably normed spaces, due to the absence of an explicit form of seminorms or to their complicated structure. The approach that we use enables us to find characteristics of operators and sequences of operators using the passage to the dual space, by-passing the definition, and makes it possible to obtain bounds for the expressions ‖An(x)‖p even if an explicit form of seminorms is unknown.

Mixed generalized modulus of smoothness and approximation by the “angle” of trigonometric polynomials
Аннотация
The notion of general mixed modulus of smoothness of periodic functions of several variables in the spaces Lp is introduced. The proposed construction is, on the one hand, a natural generalization of the general modulus of smoothness in the one-dimensional case, which was introduced in a paper of the first author and in which the coefficients of the values of a given function at the nodes of a uniform lattice are the Fourier coefficients of a 2π-periodic function called the generator of the modulus; while, on the other hand, this construction is a generalization of classical mixed moduli of smoothness and of mixed moduli of arbitrary positive order. For the modulus introduced in the paper, in the case 1 ≤ p ≤ +∞, the direct and inverse theorems on the approximation by the “angle” of trigonometric polynomials are proved. The previous estimates of such type are obtained as direct consequences of general results, new mixed moduli are constructed, and a universal structural description of classes of functions whose best approximation by “angle” have a certain order of convergence to zero is given.

It is shown that the exact order of decrease of the norm in L of the remainder of a Fourier sine series with monotone coefficients can be expressed in terms of the coefficients of the series just as for a series with convex coefficients. But the numerical multipliers in the estimates are different.

On Fourier coefficients of lacunary systems

We prove that the Zygmund space L(lnL)1/2 is the largest among symmetric spaces X in which any uniformly bounded orthonormal system of functions contains a sequence such that the corresponding space of Fourier coefficients F(X) coincides with ℓ2. Moreover, we obtain a description of spaces of Fourier coefficients corresponding to appropriate subsequences of arbitrary uniformly bounded orthonormal systems in symmetric spaces located between the spaces L(lnL)1/2 and L1.

In this case, 1) if A ≥ 0, then A is a projection and QA = AQ = 0; 2) if P is quasinormal, then P is a projection; 3) if Q ∈ M and A ∈ Lp(M, τ), then A2 ∈ Lp(M, τ). Let n be a positive integer, n > 2, and A = An ∈ M. Immersion of Kähler manifolds in the class of convex submanifolds
Аннотация
It is proved that a real complete convex Kähler submanifold in Euclidean space splits as a metric product of two-dimensional surfaces of positive Gaussian curvature in Euclidean 3-space and a Euclidean subspace. A theorem of V. K. Beloshapka and S. N. Bychkov is generalized to the case of convex submanifolds of any codimension.

Riordan arrays and generalized Lagrange series
Аннотация
The theory of Riordan arrays studies the properties of formal power series and their sequences. The notion of generalized Lagrange series proposed in the present paper is intended to fill the gap in the methodology of this theory. Generalized Lagrange series appear in it implicitly, as various equalities. No special notation is provided for these series, although particular cases of these series are generalized binomial and generalized exponential series. We give the definition of generalized Lagrange series and study their relationship with ordinary Riordan arrays and, separately, with Riordan exponential arrays.

Approximation in L2 by partial integrals of the Fourier transform over the eigenfunctions of the Sturm–Liouville operator
Аннотация
For approximations in the space L2(ℝ+) by partial integrals of the Fourier transform over the eigenfunctions of the Sturm–Liouville operator, we prove Jackson’s inequality with exact constant and optimal argument in the modulus of continuity. The optimality of the argument in the modulus of continuity is established using the Gauss quadrature formula on the half-line over the zeros of the eigenfunction of the Sturm–Liouville operator.

The stability of closed invariant sets of semidynamical systems defined on an arbitrary metric space is analyzed. The main theorems of Lyapunov’s second method for the uniform stability and uniform asymptotic stability (local and global) are stated. Illustrative examples are given.

On the convexity of images of nonlinear integral operators
Аннотация
We study continuous nonlinear Urysohn-type integral operators acting from the spaces of vector functions with integrable components to the space of continuous functions. We obtain conditions under which the images of sets defined by pointwise constraints have a convex closure under the action of these operators. The result is used to justify a method of constructive approximation of these images and to derive a necessary solvability condition for Urysohn-type integral equations. A numerical method for finding the residual of equations of this type on the sets under consideration is justified.

We introduce the notion of disinformation as an object annihilated by the corresponding information and analyze the relationships of this object with abstract analytic number theory and thermodynamics. The Dirichlet problem in the half-plane for elliptic equations containing, in addition to differential operators, the shift operator with respect to the variable parallel to the boundary of the domain is considered. The behavior of the solution as the variable orthogonal to the boundary of the domain increases unboundedly is studied.

The Ricci curvature of a weighted tree
Аннотация
An expression for the coarse Ricci curvature of a weighted tree with a random walk on the vertex set is obtained. As a corollary, it is shown that the structure of a binary tree can be reconstructed up to isomorphism from the matrix of pairwise Ricci curvatures of its vertices.

Various realizations of the Hilbert state space for quantum systems with linear constraints are considered. One of the realizations is the completion of a Schwartz space with inner product differing from L2. Another realization is a special class of distributions with inner product. An isomorphism between these realizations is constructed, and the properties of the operators are studied.
