General medical report of the obstetric department of the gynecological clinic at the Imperial University of Warsaw for the period from January 1, 1874 to March 15, 1885

Pavlov A.I.

Abstract

Introduction. The obstetric and gynecological clinic at the University of Warsaw, functioning as such, from 1869 to the present, has only for a relatively short period of time a report drawn up by the former resident of the clinic, Dr. I. I. Fedorov. This report partially fills this gap. The report includes the time from January 1, 1874 to March 15, 1885, that is, until the day of entry into the management of the Warsaw obstetric clinic by prof. N.V. Yastrebova. At the reporting time, the clinic was until 1884 under the direction of prof. Tyrkhovskaya, and from 1884 to March 15, 1885 prof. L. Neugebauer. The material for this report was collected only from the records found in the so-called control books of the Midwife Institute according to the generally accepted plan for such reports. Mournful sheets of time running the clinic prof. We had no opportunity to use Tyrkhovsky, because for reasons unknown to us, they were not in the archives of the clinic. Therefore, some sections of this report, as will be seen from the following, are far from complete, others were not developed at all due to incomplete data (for example, data on estates, employment, on the legality of birth and causes of death of children, etc.), or were developed only from a general point of view (for example, data on presentations, operations, etc.); so for example, in the section of this report on labor complications, no mention is made of complications of labor with a narrow pelvis, since in most cases it is mentioned in the records only by such a general phrase as "strictura pelvis", occasionally with a designation of the degree of contraction (in I, II , III gradu), in other cases marked or only conjug. externa, or, finally, in comparatively very few cases, conjug. vera; about dist. spin and crist. not mentioned at all; with all this, the dimensions are given for the most part in Polish inches (cale), rarely in centimeters.

TO PREVENTION OF POSTNATAL DISEASES

Rosenblatt J.

Abstract

One of the burning issues of the day in modern obstetrics is the issue of the prevention of postpartum diseases, giving a clinical complex of symptoms, known as childbirth fever. This disease everywhere carries away a mass of victims to the grave, and, moreover, in the most flourishing period of life, especially here in Russia, where rational medical care does not exist everywhere. Therefore, I think it is not superfluous to touch on this topic and report the data that I was able to derive while observing the rich material of the Leopold clinic, where I am a Volontairarzt’om. Doctor Jacob Rosenblatt.

Session on September 17 in the morning

Abstract

Berry Hart (Edinburgh), speaker. - Usually at the beginning of labor, and often even before the onset of any signs of labor, the most severe blood loss is observed in cases of placenta previa, and this circumstance mostly coincides with one of the usual periods of menstruation. The cervix, due to the proximity of the attachment of the placenta, is always very vascular, and sometimes extremely tense. Any attempt to pass the hand through the cervix at this time, with the aim of separating the placenta completely or removing the baby, can only be made at the risk of rupture or injury to the uterus. Extraction of the fetus through the cervix, even in cases where there is no need to penetrate the uterus by hand, is a process associated with insignificant chances for the child and with great danger for the mother: hence the indication is to act without violence and haste.

Abstract

Chambrelent. — Postpartum eclampsia is now seen primarily as the result of some kind of self-infection. The latest work, in particular the work of Bouchard, in France, has indeed shown that with this suffering, urine, often excreted in very small quantities, at the same time is devoid of most of its toxic properties.

TO THE QUESTION ABOUT A MORE CORRECT STATEMENT OF EDUCATION OF MIDWIFE AT US, IN RUSSIA

Perfiliev O.M.

Abstract

Is it worth it, apparently, to talk a lot about such a modest in its purpose a book like this? Indeed, there are few such popular books on various fields of medicine and hygiene, and such books that should not be opened: before that, in most cases, they are poorly, ineptly, to such an extent, in their publication, counting on the pocket of consumers is visible. It is all the more pleasant, without a doubt, to meet everything that bears the stamp of originality or a consciousness of the real benefits that should result from such books for readers. The “leader” of Mr. Artemyev, despite the modesty of the purpose for which it is intended, and the obvious narrowness, specialty of its content, this is exactly the book: it is also original, in the sense of some innovations in the author's views on the subject of his specialty (he obstetrician) and the tasks of such books, which is the present, and, indeed, pursues specific, practical goals, will really benefit its readers.
