This article offers a comprehensive theological analysis of the principle of unity between word and deed in the pastoral ministry of Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) of Sourozh during the period of the “turn of the millennium.” The subject of analysis is the continuity of spiritual experience, specifically the key biographical episodes in the formation of the future archpastor and outstanding preacher under the guidance of his spiritual father, Archimandrite Afanasy (Nechaev). The relevance of this work is determined by the contemporary Church’s need for an authentic unity of word and deed in pastoral ministry, where preaching is based not on abstract constructs, but on lived spiritual experience and the living witness of the priest’s faith. This is particularly significant in a context where external observance of rituals can become more important than, and often substitute for, a person’s internal work of transforming their mind and heart. The methodological basis of the study comprises general scientific methods of deduction and generalization to specify biographical data. The dialectical method is applied to compare the perspectives of Metropolitan Anthony and his spiritual father through the lens of patristic heritage. Hermeneutical analysis provides an in-depth interpretation of sermon texts, revealing the meaning of prayer as an essential prerequisite for encountering God and the balance between strict asceticism and Christian mercy. The study reveals that Christ-centeredness and unwavering adherence to patristic tradition constitute the foundation of authentic spiritual life. Examining Metropolitan Anthony’s spiritual journey and homiletic legacy reveals that the transmission of Orthodox values is intrinsically linked to the pastor’s personal character and life example. Genuine ecclesial integration (churching) is achieved not through formal asceticism, which may alienate others, but through synergistic interaction with God, active love for others, and internal transformation. The study establishes that a true pastor must communicate his lived spiritual experience while remaining attuned to contemporary realities, thereby guiding his flock toward salvation through the inseparable unity of preaching the Word of God and embodying it in his own life.
Статья посвящена комплексному богословскому исследованию принципа единства слова и дела в пастырском служении митрополита Сурожского Антония (Блума) в период «перелома тысячелетий». Предметом анализа является преемственность духовного опыта, а именно ключевые биографические эпизоды становления будущего архипастыря и выдающегося проповедника под руководством духовника архимандрита Афанасия (Нечаева). Актуальность работы обусловлена запросом современной Церкви на присутствие в пастырском служении подлинного единства слова и дела, то есть когда проповедь основана не на абстрактных конструкциях, а на пережитом духовном опыте, живом свидетельстве веры священника. Всё это особенно значимо в условиях, когда внешнее соблюдение обрядов становится важнее и зачастую подменяет внутреннюю работу человека над изменением своих ума и сердца. Методологическую основу исследования составили общенаучные методы дедукции и обобщения, позволившие конкретизировать биографические данные. Диалектический метод применён для сопоставления взглядов митрополита и его духовника через призму святоотеческого наследия. Герменевтический метод использован для глубокой интерпретации текстов проповедей, раскрывающих смысл молитвы как необходимого условия встречи с Богом и баланса между строгой аскезой и христианским милосердием. В результате исследования выявлено, что фундаментом правильной духовной жизни является христоцентричность и неизменная опора на святоотеческое наследие. На примере духовной жизни и проповеднической деятельности митрополита Антония показано, что успешность передачи православных ценностей напрямую связана с личностью пастыря и его жизненным примером; что подлинное воцерковление достигается человеком не через формальный аскетизм, способный оттолкнуть ближних, а через синергийное взаимодействие с Богом, деятельную любовь к окружающим и внутреннее преображение. Установлено, что истинный пастырь обязан транслировать пережитый духовный опыт, учитывая реалии современности, чтобы вести паству ко спасению через неразрывное единство проповеди Слова Божия и собственной жизни.
