Resumo
The present article considers the changing role of coal-fired power plants in the world’s largest national energy systems in the context of rapid development of the competitive environment and active transition to a low-carbon energy system. It also discusses approaches to technological adaptation to new economic and ecological challenges. Special attention is devoted to the characteristics of the developmental conditions of coal-fired thermal power plants in the Unified Power System of Russia in light of amplified inter-fuel competition with gas-fired and nuclear power plants. The problem of creating incentives for the development of coal-fired power plants as a constituent element in the effort to satisfy the requirements of energy security of Russia and its individual regions is discussed.
