Uncertainty in Standard Measurements of Solid Fuels

Possokhov Y.

Аннотация

On the basis of the principles in State Standard GOST R ISO 21748, formulas are derived for the expanded uncertainty in standard methods of measurements of eleven coal parameters. Values of the uncertainty are calculated. A form of representation of the measurement results is proposed for use in the test protocols of laboratories accredited on the basis of State Standard GOST ISO 17025.

Influence of Coal Properties on the Gross Calorific Value and Moisture-Holding Capacity

Balaeva Y., Kaftan Y., Miroshnichenko D., Kotliarov E.

Аннотация

Analysis of the composition, structure, and properties of 63 samples of Ukrainian, Russian, and United States coal clarifies their influence on the gross calorific value in the wet and dry ash-free states and the maximum moisture content. Quantitative formulas are obtained for the influence of the petrographic characteristics on the gross calorific value and moisture-holding capacity of coal from different sources. On that basis, those parameters may be calculated with high precision. The proposed formulas permit methodological recommendations in calculating the gross calorific value in the wet ash-free state. This is important in speeding the passage of imported coal through customs.

Coke Quality and Blast-Furnace Performance

Muchnik D., Trikilo A., Lyalyuk V., Kassim D.

Аннотация

On the basis of six-year operational data for a 5000-m3 blast furnace, the dependence of the coke consumption on its strength M25 and M10 and the content of the >80 mm fraction is calculated by different methods. The quality of the coke has a clear influence on coke consumption and blast-furnace economics. As an illustration, for some of the equations derived, means are established for predicting the economic benefit associated with improving coke quality and reducing its consumption, in specific blast-furnace conditions.

Changing the Properties of Coal Pitch by Means of Additives

Ostrovskiy V., Starichenko N.

Аннотация

The influence of various additives—including nanoparticles—on coal pitch is investigated, with a view to improving its properties. Surfactants facilitate the formation of coal-pitch products but have little effect on their properties. Materials that react with the pitch components may increase the yield and microstructure of pitch coke. Nanoparticles increase the yield of pitch coke and its aggregate strength. Additives are classified in terms of their effects on the pitch.
