Abstract
The applicability of Mössbauer spectroscopy in studying grain boundaries in ultrafine-grained materials produced by severe plastic deformation (SPD) is analyzed. It is shown that grain boundaries after SPD are in a nonequilibrium state that is characterized by excess free volume.
