Content of Na+, K+, Cl, and Ca2+ in the Blood of Juveniles of the Black Sea Trout Salmo trutta labrax under Intrapopulational Differentiation

Pavlov D., Pavlov E., Ganzha E., Kostin V.

Аннотация

The content of Na+, K+, Cl, and Ca2+ in blood of farm-raised juveniles of Black Sea trout at the age 10 and 12 months, at the stage of selection of life strategy, was measured. Change in ion exchange related to smoltification in the fish kept in freshwater begins in females earlier than in males. After differentiation of parr in the smolt, the concentrations of Na+ and Ca2+ decrease and the concentration of K+ increases in comparison with that of the resident form. An increase in water salinity does not activate osmoregulatory restructuring of the organism. The decrease in the concentrations of Na+ and Cl in blood of the Black Sea trout may indicate the beginning of the smoltification process.

Genetic Structure of the Coho Salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch in the Rivers of Northeastern Russia according to the Data on the Variability of the Cytochrome B Gene of Mitochondrial DNA

Bachevskaya L., Ivanova G., Pereverzeva V., Agapova G.

Аннотация

We note the special features of the genetic structure of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum) populations from the rivers of the mainland coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, eastern Kamchatka, and Chukotka. The evolutionary age of the mitochondrial gene pool of this species from the studied localities is estimated. It is shown that the most widespread haplotype K1 appeared in coho salmon populations at the border of Middle and Late Pleistocene. The primary structure of the coho salmon Cytb protein is investigated. Radical substitutions in the amino acid sequence of this polypeptide are detected, which confirms the influence of the positive vector of directional selection.

Siberian Roe Deer (Capreolus pygargus Pallas, 1771) in Ukraine: Analysis of the Mitochondrial and Nuclear DNA

Danilkin A., Plakhina D., Zvychaynaya E., Domnich A., Kholodova M., Sorokin P., Volokh A.

Аннотация

A molecular-genetic analysis of the nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome b gene (1140 base pairs) of the mitochondrial DNA and 17 microsatellite loci of eight samples of roe deer from the Samara forest of Dnipropetrovsk oblast (Ukraine) was carried out. For comparison, 212 corresponding mtDNA sequences of the Siberian and European roe deer and data on the variability of microsatellite markers in 49 representatives of these species were included in the study. It was noted that all the analyzed mitochondrial sequences of individuals from the Samara forest are characteristic of the Siberian roe Capreolus pygargus Pallas, 1771. Four haplotypes were described, all of which belonged to the haplogroup typical for the western part of the range of C. pygargus. A fragment analysis of the microsatellite loci of nuclear DNA confirmed the identification of the investigated group with the Siberian species.

Epidermal Molting in the Bowhead Whale Balaena mysticetus

Chernova O., Shpak O., Kiladze A., Rozhnov V.

Аннотация

Epidermal molting in the bowhead whales that regularly enter Ulbanskiy Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk in summer has been reported and proven by histological methods. Longitudinal delamination and detachment of thin or thick sheets of a considerable area have been established for the surface layer (stratum externum) of the whale epidermis during molting. A correlation of molting intensity to the level of proliferation and regeneration of all epidermal layers has been noted and assumed to stabilize the thickness of the skin. The phenomenon of molting is discussed from the viewpoint of adaptation of the whales to the conditions of the shallow bays of the Sea of Okhotsk that warm up thoroughly in the summer.

Compressive Nonlinearity in the Auditory System: Manifestation in the Action of Complex Sound Signals

Milekhina O., Nechaev D., Popov V., Supin A.

Аннотация

In psychophysical experiments on humans, a cochlear compression was revealed by comparing onfrequency and low-frequency masking in the conditions of discrimination of complex spectra of sound signals. It has been established that, with an increase in the level of the masker, the limit of the discriminable density of the spectrum ripples decreases. It was noted that when the signal level increased, the on-frequency masker level at threshold grew proportionally to the level of the signal, whereas the low-frequency masker level grew much more slowly, indicating the compression of the signal, which was not affected by lateral suppression and off-frequency listening.

Morphobiochemical Adaptations to the Littoral Environment in Some Atlantic Gastropods

Alyakrinskaya I.

Аннотация

The morphobiochemical adaptations to the drying and feeding of four species of littoral mollusks collected in a confined area of the Atlantic coast have been analyzed: Tectarius striatus, Siphonaria pectinata, Phorcus atratus, and P. sauciatus. It was established that these mollusks differ strongly from each other morphologically and biochemically, thus demonstrating a variety of adaptations to the same environmental conditions. It was noted that T. striatus is the most adapted to live in the tidal zone. It is assumed that the survival of P. atratus and P. sauciatus in the conditions of drying is to some extent maintained by the green pigment (biliverdin) concentrated in the soft tissues, as its quantity increases as the mollusks remain without water.

Pattern of Biomass Partitioning into Fractions of Boreal Trees

Komarov A., Ginzhul L., Shanin V., Bykhovets S., Bobkova K., Kuznetsov M., Manov A., Osipov A.

Аннотация

Ratios between above- and underground phytomass of tree organs were studied for different forest types. The partitioning of phytomass into tree fractions was described using rank distributions characterizing the relationships between the resource volume available for each tree organ and the ranks of biomass fractions. Species-specific parameters of biomass partitioning into tree organs were calculated, and the dependences of these parameters on the forest type and tree size were revealed. Independent verification of the biomass distribution model was performed.

Climatic Signals in Tree Ring Anatomical Structure of Larix gmelinii Growing under Contrasting Hydrothermal Conditions within the Forest-Tundra Ecotone

Fakhrutdinova V., Benkova V., Shashkin A.

Аннотация

The results of comparative analysis of tree-ring anatomical structure in the trunk of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. growing in the forest-tundra ecotone in the north of Middle Siberia in contrasting hydrothermal conditions of permafrost soils are discussed. It is found that the best soil hydrothermal conditions affected the formation of relatively large tracheids in earlywood and latewood during the whole period investigated. Current climate warming has caused a positive trend in annual changes in the cellular characteristics in trees growing in relatively favorable soil conditions and has not caused observable changes in trees growing in adverse conditions. The wood anatomy structure of the water–conducting (earlywood) zone in the tree ring in favorable conditions is determined by the weather of late May and June, and in adverse conditions it is determined by the weather in late April and May.
