Zapiski of the Russian Mineralogical Society

Zapiski Rossiiskogo Mineralogicheskogo Obshchestva (Proceedings of the Russian Mineralogical Society) is the journal of the Russian Mineralogical Society (RMS). It has appeared continuously since 1866 and publishes research papers in the fields of mineralogy, crystallography, petrology, economic geology, and geochemistry.

Subject areas suitable for publication include new minerals, classification and nomenclature of minerals, mineral parageneses, mineral deposits, mineralogical crystallography, experimental mineralogy, major and trace element mineral chemistry, thermodynamic modeling of petrological and geochemical processes, organic mineralogy and biomineralogy, archaemineralogy, applied mineralogy, and environmental mineralogy.

Zapiski RMO is traditionally addressed to Russian readers, many of them are members of RMS. At the same time, the publication of articles in English is highly welcomed.

Selected English translations of the journal articles are annully published as special issues of Geology of Ore Deposits (ISSN 1075-7015; e-ISSN 1555-6476; distributed worldwide by Springer).

About Typification of Rare-Metal Plumasite (Li-F) Granites

摘要
The possibility of distinguishing among the arrays of rare-metal plumasite (Li-F) granites of the previously outlined three types, differing in chemical and mineral composition, associated metasomatites, rare-metal specialization and ore potential, is considered. The identified types are briefly characterized: the average composition of the main rocks from a number of described massifs of each type is given, the main mineralogical and geochemical features are emphasized, and the possibilities of their use as indicator features for the typification of Li-F granites are discussed.

Transformation of Mineral of the Gold–Silver Series in the Oleninskoe Metamorphosed Epithermal Deposits, Kola Region

In the Oleninskoe deposit, secondary minerals form after gold-silver alloys which are rich in silver and contain minor antimony. Au-rich silver is replaced by uytenbogaardtite, gold-bearing acanthite, and mustard gold. Native silver is replaced by hessite, sulfur-rich hessite, acanthite, and “mustard silver” (silver analogue of mustard gold), which form fine-grained aggregates. Three main kinds of mustard gold and mustard silver are distinguished: 1 – gold and silver with oxides of Fe, Pb, Sb, and other metals; 2 – gold and silver with oxides, halogenides, and carbonaceous matter; 3 – gold and silver with halogenides (Cl, Br). Secondary sulfides and tellurides, mustard gold and mustard silver formed under hypogenic conditions, with low-temperature reduced chloride hydrothermal solutions rich in tellurium.

Unusual Sr-Rich Phosphates of the Apatite Supergroup from the Lovozero Alkaline Massif, Kola Peninsula

Previously unknown trigonal variety of fluorisgaitte (fluorisgaitte-T), a rare Ca-Sr phosphate from the hedyphane group of the apatite supergroup, has been identified in foyatie of the eudialyte complex on Mount Sengischorr of the Lovozero alkaline massif (Kola Peninsula). A low-fluorine analogue of fluorisgaitte has also been revealed in this location (Mt. Sengischorr) within the polkilitic sodalite syenite of the Polkilitic complex. The morphology and mineral associations of studied phosphates indicate their late crystallization within the rocks formed in the end of magmatic stage of the massif formation. Chemical compositions of these two minerals are similar in high contents of sodium and rare-earth elements, being though significantly different in the content of fluorine. The differences in ordered cation distribution within the crystal structures of described minerals lead to the different space group symmetry, i. e., P-3 for the mineral from foyatie, P63/m for the mineral from the polkilitic sodalite syenite. We have identified the fluorisgaitte-belovite solid-solutions series. The compositions of studied samples of Sr-rich phosphates (fluorisgaitte-T and low-fluorine analogue of fluorisgaitte) are determined to be near the borderline between the end-members of the series.

Crystal Chemistry of Minerals and Inorganic Compounds with Lavendulan Clusters. III. Information-Based Analysis of Structural Complexity

The article presents the results of symmetry and information analysis of the structural complexity of 18 minerals and inorganic compounds with layers of lavendulan clusters. It is shown that the point symmetry of clusters can vary from maximum (4mm) to minimum (1), whereas layer symmetry is never trivial. In all known lavendulan structures, there is only one symmetrically independent type of lavendulan cluster. Minerals and compounds with hydrogen bonds have the lowest layer groups, while the most symmetrical layers are generally characteristic of anhydrous synthetic compounds. The complexity of the structure is associated with the dissymmetrization of the layer due to interlayer and hydrogen complexes. In general, for the group of structures under consideration, the principles of Pauling parsimony and minimal information are met, which assert the tendency of the crystal structure to the maximal simplicity (maximal configurational entropy).

Lithological and Geochemical Study of the Natural Stone from the Novgorod Temples of the XII–XV Centuries

Plinths and bricks, blocks and slabs of natural stone of various lithological types and ages were used in Novgorod churches of the XIIth–XVth centuries. The results of the study show that, in addition to the Buregy shell- and flag-stones, ancient architects used limestones from Svinord, Porkhov, Chudovo and Snetnaya Gora Formations (Fransian Stage, Upper Devonian) for the construction of church walls, which were probably transported to Novgorod by water from the root outcrops and patches along the banks of the Koloshka, Shelon' and Mshaga rivers, as well as from the southern shores of Lake Ilmen'. The architectural structures of the 12th century were characterized by the use, generally, of Porkhov-Svinord and Chudovo limestones in the bulk, and for later periods — Buregi limestones. Verification of the results of the stone examination was carried out using a neural network (Random Forest algorithm).

Molecular Composition and Thermal Properties of Fossil Resins from the Kara-Khatanga Tar-Bearing Subprovince

For the first time, a comparison of the molecular composition (based on infrared spectroscopy data) and thermal properties of fossil resins from the Yugorsky and Taimyr peninsulas has been conducted, which is important for understanding their formation processes. Using the example of fossil resins from the Taimyr peninsula, it has been demonstrated that their molecular composition and thermal behavior change over time (from the Albian to the Santonian), but insignificantly, highlighting the stability of these resins under diagenetic conditions. However, the mechanisms of these changes are different for gedanites and retinites. The processes of aromatization and the loss of exomethylene groups are key stages in the chemical degradation mechanism occurring during their fossilization. A relative correlation between some thermal parameters, infrared spectroscopy data and the degree of maturity of the resins was found. The fossil resins of the Taimyr peninsula can be used as indirect reference samples for stratigraphic correlations. The results of these correlations confirmed the earlier hypothesis proposed by N. P. Yushkin regarding the Cretaceous age of the fossil resins from the Yugorsky peninsula.
