It has been published since 1965 (the former name was “Protection of Metals”). The journal publishes materials on theoretical and applied aspects of surface physical chemistry, new materials, their behavior in various conditions and environments, control of their properties, control and protection against degradation and environmental impact. The journal is peer-reviewed and included in the VAK List. It is included in the Russian Science Citation Index database on the Web of Science platform, the RSCI system.

HISTORY OF RENAMING: Protection of metals (from 1965 to 2008)

In 2008, the subject of the journal was significantly expanded and it was renamed "Physical chemistry of the surface and protection of materials".
