Экспансины кодируются большим мультигенным семейством и подразделяются на четыре подсемейства, основными из которых являются альфа- и бета-экспансины; последние получили особое развитие у злаков. Считается, что экспансины модифицируют взаимодействия целлюлозы с ксилоглюканом (альфа-экспансины) или с арабиноксиланом (бета-экспансины). При этом экспансины не обладают каталитической активностью, конкретный механизм их действия неясен, непонятно физиологическое значение столь большого разнообразия изоформ. Для изучения характера экспрессии отдельных экспансинов мы провели транскриптомный анализ всех идентифицированных в геноме кукурузы генов экспансинов, используя удобную модельную систему – зоны растущего первичного корня кукурузы, различающиеся по стадии развития клеток и составу их клеточных стенок. Из 91 гена экспансинов кукурузы в корне экспрессировались 67, причем для большинства генов экспансинов был характерен узкий диапазон зон с максимальным уровнем транскриптов. С применением сконструированного гликоэррея, содержащего 183 полисахарида из клеточных стенок растений различных видов, показано, что рекомбинантные экспансины AtEXPA1 и AtEXPB1 способны связываться с арабиногалактанами и рамногалактуронанами I и рядом других полисахаридов клеточных стенок, что расширяет список их потенциальных углеводных мишеней. Продемонстрированы различия в специфичности взаимодействия альфа- и бета-экспансинов с различными полисахаридами, как в количественном, так и в качественном отношении.
